Broken Fridge, A Week to Repair

Hallo All
We have a broken fridge. I noticed the freezer not freezing on Sunday lunchtime and thought the door hadn't been closed properly, so made sure it was closed and went off for the weekend. Got back last night to discover everything completely defrosted. As this had been for 36 hours we had to chuck everything.
Landlady can't get her Bosch man out for another week. She says she will reimburse for the food we had to chuck, but what do we do in the meantime. We can't store any of our food so will have to have takeaways, or expensive 'portioned' food etc etc.
Can we demand the fridge be fixed immediately?? Can we charge for wastage we have over the next week - food that's leftover from supper that then has to be chucked? And so on....... ANd what if Bosch man turns up next week, says we need parts and they're another week on order....??
Help appreciated, thank you!
xx

I'm not sure where you stand with regards to a claim but when my Bosch dishwasher recently broke it took them over a week to come and have a look, so even if you did demand she fix it immediately it is unlikely to happen.0

Buy eggs, potatoes, fresh vegetables generally, bread.
On the way home from work each evening buy the meat you want to eat that evening. Get some powdered milk. Be careful about the portions you cook.
Bake a cake
Make some pastry for pies/pasties
Have porridge with powdered milk and drinking chocolate powder for breakfast
There was life before fridges, and there will be life after fridges.0 -

As a tenant you can expect your landlord to act as promptly as possible to sort out repairs but if the landlord cannot get the repairman out or the repairman doesn't have the right parts, demanding immediate action or compensation is unreasonable.
Once you own your own property or have a landlord that makes you sort out repairs yourself, you will realise that repairmen are laws unto themselves.
Imp has told you what you can do.
You can also ask around your own friends and family to see if anyone has a beer fridge that you can borrow. That way you can store fresh milk for over a day.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Don't forget wood to light a fire and cook with, a carpet beater and some candles for light.0 -
before the days off a fridge we used to keep milk and butter in a basin off cold water ."Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many"0

Before the days of MSE, you would say thanks to your landlord for getting someout to fix the fridge and wait patientlyHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

thank god you are not my tenant
i never respond to DEMANDS0 -
tinned food doesn't need to be refrigerated, add that to the fresh veg, very little of which really needs to be in the fridge either and with a nice tin of corned beef you can have alovely corned beef hash every night!
Or pasta with tomato sauce (using tinned toms, tom puree, onion and a few herbs)
Then veg curry (add fresh meat if desired)
You might have to buy fresh milk very day, but that's hardly gonna cost a fotune0 -
As somebody who makes a living out of giving landlords and ladies a hard time, I'm generally thought to be on the side of the tenant. But honestly! It sounds like yours is being as reasonable as she is able. Surely you can live without a fridge for a little while?0

To be honest, it sounds like your landlady is doing all she can to get it fixed. Landlord/ladys aren't superhuman and repairmen are ineffiicient at the best of times.
You will be astonished how long some stuff lasts outside of a fridge. when I was a student, we had no fridge and you quickly learn how long food will survive.
I can't think of a single foodstuff that won't survive 2 days outside of a fridge. Milk
will easily last 3 days. Butter lasts for weeks, and most cold meat will last a few days.
We've become so accustomed to living with refrigeration that we have forgotten that a lot of stuff can be stored perfectly well outside of a fridge. One trick we learned in the winter was to stick stuff in a carrier bag and hang it outside an upstairs window by trapping the top of the bag in the window.0
