  • you could purchase a home testing kit - http://www.fertell.co.uk/
i recently did this just to try and put my mind at ease its £25 so not too expensive

  • Only asking as i am 26 and have PCOS, i will not know if i am affected on my chances of having children until i start trying, but obviously i know full well to expect that it may take longer than i would like. Which is in a way comforting to know, i know that sounds really weird, but id rather know in advance that things could take awhile, rather than get upset and go through tests gallore to find out whats going on.

Just to reassure you continual diamond both my sisters have PCOS and both concieved naturally just took a bit longer each time (one has 3 children and the other has 4) - they started their families fairly early (22 ish) but my one of my brothers in law also had fertility probs so it wasn't just the pcos in that couple's case and they had the 4 kids.
  • I believe the standard treatment for PCOS is a drug called metformin - it is supposed to be very effective

Personally metformin did not suit me, but, in MSE style I will add that I paid for a private prescription for it, which worked out very much cheaper than NHS prescription fee. (Obviously private medical care is not free though so those costs need to be considered ;) )

I know that infertility is something that worries a lot of women.
I and a lot of friends i talk to all at some point became convinced that we were infertile (generally due to taking a few risks and never getting 'caught')
i would say to her that unless you have been trying for at least a year then not to worry about it because when you do start trying state of mind has a significant effect on how soon you get pregnant.
We were trying to concieve our second child for 2 years without success and it consumed my every thought.
I gave up thinking about it when we got married as i had so much else on my mind and lo and behold i came home from honeymoon pregnant!!!
So i would say relax, enjoy trying and only worry when it has been a year!!!
I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.

Hi there - I would suggest that your gf speak to her GP. There are tests and advice they can give her. Are you currently trying to conceive?

My husbands parents were told thye would never have children after 9 years of trying. After that they managed to have three. My parents also had trouble concieving - it took them 4 years, and then they went on to have three.

With the above information we figured we'd have issues and it would take us a while - however the first month the tried to concieve we managed it. So much for us thinking it would take years!

Really, the first step is voicing her concerns with her GP. At the same time you can buy ovulation tests from boots and cheaply on ebay.

    good luck

Yeh.. i've got a mate who's a doc and has promised to write me private prescriptions.. must get that sorted some day..

Anyhoo, the wifey is on metformin, and we've looked into it and the way you start your treatment is important.. the dosage should be scaled up very gradually our you can feel very ill from it

Uhuh. In fact I only had a very mild 'reaction' to it, very livable with, its just that it didn't really help and so felt a bit pointless. :o My dad takes metformin now...for diabetes  .

My mum and dad struggled to have children to have me for 5 years and then it took another 8 years to have my brother so I was concerned that it would be the same for me. I had heard so much about friends with fertiilty issues I was convinced that it would be the same for me. However it turned out that I fell straight away with my DS and I am 18 weeks pregnant with my second child and again I literally got pregnant the first time i tried! Try not to panic-as people have said before go to the doctors if you have tried for a year without success. My SIL has the severest kind of endometriosis(sp?) there is and was told that she would never have children. She went through 2 unsuccessful cycles of IVF. however she miraculously fell pregnant naturally against all the odds and has a lovely one year old girl so hope never goes. Good luck

  • We don't know what problems you are worrying about, but if your OH has PCOS then metformin might help with some of the day to day symptoms, you don't have to be trying for a baby, metformin can help with acne and facial hair too.

The way it works here is that you try for a baby for at least a year before the doc will refer you for tests. there's a waiting list too, and the tests take a while to come back. My consultant increased my metformin and said 'on the next visit we'll discuss clomid' three years after i started trying for a baby. luckily i had an op for endometriosis and literally got pregnant that same month :D

how old are you? is there any urgency to starting a family, or are you thinking about leaving it for a few years?
