Do O2 Do Cold Calling?
Do O2 do cold calling? I've just had a phone call (via my Orange mobile phone) asking if I'd be interested in one of their contract phone deals.
I was interested but alarm bells started ringing when I was asked for my bank account details. I told her under no circumstances would I do that over the phone. She then offered to put me through to her manager to verify that they were O2!! I still didn't budge.
I said I would apply via the O2 website..She offered to phone me later but I kept my foot down.
I'm a bit annoyed to be honest, and it doesn't seem very professional if the call was genuine.

If they ring again ask them for their number so you can call them. You will get a good clue from the area code/o8705/0800 etc and also the greeting you get from the other end.
I used to work for a bank and many security conscious customers would do the same when I called.Getting Married 19/02/110 -
I had a call from somoone claiming to be from O2. This was a couple of months prior to my contract ending with BTMobile. Told them this, and they said they would ring back. Never did though......Waddle you do eh?0

I think I read somewhere that companies have been passing themselves off as '3'.
What I would do is get their name, department/site and extension number and then ring o2's switchboard on 0113 272 2000 and ask to be put through.
I'm probably over cautious here but if they give you a number to ring then depending on how they greet you. "o2 customer services. Can I help you" and it isn't the person you need to speak with then that is ok but if they give you a 0870 or something similar and it appears to be their direct line then ideally you would need further proof as there is nothing stopping me from getting myself an 0870 number (like most other companies) and diverting to my landline and just answering "o2 customer services". This is unlikely to be the case if it is answered by a different person (as is likely in a call centre).0 -
Suspect its someone scamming (remember something like this a while back). But if you are interested, take down the details of the offer and call O2 using their general phone number. If the offer is genuine then the people who pick the phone up will be able to help you.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

It will have been an independent dealer. They random dial lots of people, sometimes pretending to be from the network - I've had "it's about the Orange contract", which doesn't mean they are from Orange. When I spoke to Orange CS, I was told that even Orange staff get this nonsense on their own phones.
It is equally unlikely that your call was from O2. I usually ask the name of their company, and say I've never heard of it. So far, every one of them has hung up.
Don't give any bank account details to random callers. They may not even have been a phone dealer.0 -
Hi,
I bought my latest mobile phone contract on o2 over the phone (1000xnet mins and 150 texts for £35 per month, bargain!) and was just as suspicious as I wasnt sure how they'd got my number! I got an 0800 number from them and called back in myself and only then did I go ahead with it. I had already seen the deals they were doing online and as it turns out, the deals that are available on the website are only available through o2 direct, not via places like cpwh, phones 4u etc. I found them really helpful and personally I thought the service was great. Was a bit wary about the bank details side of things but what I have since found out is if you are only giving a sort code and account number and not a credit card number then there is nothing anyone can do with them except set up a direct debit. (I called my bank to check cause i'm a bit para about things!)0 -
I have been cold called by O2 this week whilst at work. I get a lot of these but it's because I am the manager of an office and they get my details from a number of sources. I don't follow up very many of them but I did on this occasion because he referred me to the O2 website. This makes it genuine to me as he was quite happy for me to make the discounted purchace online at the official website.A bargain is something you don't need at a price you can't resist.0
