It's got residential planning permission 12 months a year at the moment? Will it need to be changed from residential to business rates when you're letting it out as a caravan?

I just don't think I see why you're not going to use the money off your parents and then same as much as you would each money in full rent to pay off the remaining tiny loan ASAP. And then continue to save. but you've not saved any money yourself yet? Or have you?

OH parents have full planning permission for 2 caravans - they currently have 1 there which some1 lives in. thats all i know. I know that it would be alot easier to just borrow that £20k and pay it back over the 5 years as we wouldnt get charged any interest. As far as I know they would not want to do that, I will however ask them again. As it would save a lot of time and money

If it is a static or holiday caravan as opposed to a mobile or park home then the construction/insulation/heating will not usually be as good as a park home, as they're not designed for year round living. The bedrooms tend to be larger as do the kitchens. However they are of course more expensive than a static.

  • Hi,

we had to stay in our caravan in winter during building works at our home, after a few cold nights i kicked my husband out and told him to go and buy some oil filled panel heaters, which he did and they made the world of difference and they have timers on so nice and warm in the morning.
i would say that statics are a bit smaller than the park homes.

but if you are getting a 12ft wide it makes it a bit easier to move around than in a 10ft. We have had a washing machine plumbed in which we keep outside in a plastic storage shed.

i hope this helps and dont forget your fleecy pj's for those cold nights.

ps the caravan looks ok on surfbay!

Bride On A Budget - Oh yes I totally agree about the heating - I expect it would get a little chilly without any. This particular one is is double glazed and has central heating - so hopefully it will be nice and toasty. Thanks again

Staciep88. I debated yesterday about posting this, and I hope you receive this in the spirit it is meant....

..I think the caravan is the least of your problems. IIRC there have been someissues with the land when you and your partner proposed to build with what rights you would have in the case o a breakdon in the relationship. Your partner is in debt, you would have few liabilities in the case of a breakdown, but your rights would be harder to ascertain. I sincerely hope your relationship does NOT breakdown but I belive you are putting yourself in a vulnerable position both financially and emotionally.

I have no idea what the best opiton would be financially, call the council check th planng is for full time residential and what the council tax would be, consider buying a secondhand one rather than new and for goodness sake be prepared to spend on some form of written agreement cementing what you could walk away with should things go belly up and what rights your partner's parents, he landowners?, would be entitled to as well.

I wish you the very best of luck and sympathise entirely (DH and I are camping in a spare room in my parents house to save to buy, so I really am fully sympathetic).

lostinrates: thank you I do appreciate that and have thought about it with the concern of the land and I would get something written up. The planning permission is def there for full residential as I have mentioned before - there is already some1 else living in a caravan there now permenantly. I have seen a few 2nd hand ones that are ok but I dont know which way to go really. I think me and OH are going to go to his parents later and talk about the options as something needs to be in place due to the fact that if we were to go ahead with a loan it would be in my name, and my name only due to his credit rating

Waht's wrong with the one next to it on the website at 6 grand cheaper and the same size and year? Why saddle yourself and OH with even more debt thna you need to for a temp solution?

I did mention the "security of tenure" issue when you posted on this before. In your shoes, I would be going ahead to get that in writing before spending so much as the time to fill in a loan application; let alone spending money on phone calls or going along to view potentially available 'vans.
