Don't take his word for it. I would check again. I had a Bannatynes membership and during the 12 months became pregnant. I could have continued to go, but I was very tired and didn't want to. They phoned me to ask if there was a problem and I explained that I didn't need the membership and was planning to cancel at the end of the 12 month period. I was told that I just needed to give one months notice. At the end of the 11th month I phoned to cancel and was told that it was a three month notice period. I complained and after many phone calls they admitted I had been told it was a one month period and agreed to accept one and a half months. (It was half-way through the month by the time it was sorted.)

I was just told that I pay X amount a month and it was a years minimum term... not exactly open about the terms but I do agree that what they are doing is legal, it is written in the T&C, buts thats not to say it is fair and I would encourage people to stay well away from Bannatynes

If it was a years minimum term contract then they have every right to say that you have a 3 month cancellation period as it is not a membership for just one year. If you had signed up for a contract that stated you would only have to pay X amount for 12 months and thats it, then you would be able to question them.

Unfortunately you haven't read the terms of the contract thoroughly.

    I like Duncan :p
  • Just wondering does anyone know when they changed it from 1 month to 3 months notice? As I was a member few years ago and when I cancelled it it was 1 month. I joined well over a year ago and they told me it was 1 month cancelation (although I must admit I took their word rather than check so partly my fault) period after the initial 12 months and now I have asked to cancel its now 3 months.

We've been hit with exactly the same problem. We actually joined Living Well but were told we had to sign for new cards to use the turnstiles when they were bought over. Only change was we'd now have to pay £1 for a towel. Membership has been running without a break since late 2006.

Now OH has had a stroke and gone completely blind in last year and we haven't used the gym. Asked to cancel today and 3 months notice suddently appeared courtesy of us signing for those new cards!! They never mentioned new t&cs and while you can all yell at me for signing naively so did my blind OH as they told him it was only for a card. Cut it anyway that's not acceptable, he couldn't read the conditions, they knew that, he's very visibly blind - missing eye white stick - not subtle. So now we've been told we have to hassle our GP to get the medical exemption letter as Head Office will reject every other form of evidence and local gyms can't make decisions.

I know the recession's hard and I was prepared to pay the month we had signed up to but this is beyond a joke and I will be pursuing it.

The most common complaint for trading standards in the past 12 months have been gym memberships. They will use all kinds of promotions to get you to sign up but it is up to the individual to read all the small print.

go for the 1 month medical certificate from your doctor
    i did it worked
just spread the word how hiddeous bannatynes gyms are
  • Was planning on cancelling my membership today, then come accross this thread after searching through a few things. Not at all happy about this.

If i go in and cancel today, does that mean they take my card etc and I don't get to go, whilc they still takr 3 months of payments out when I'm no longer using the facilities?

Would would happen if I just cancelled the DD after 1 month (so giving them 1 monthyl notice basically). How far would they be likely to push for the 2 months outstanding, if at all?

    Cheers,

Why am I so bad with money !
