Increasing the hover time??

Options
When you hover over a post in 'New Posts list' or within a category the text of the first poster appears for about 5 seconds (there is probably a technical term for this), is there a way to increase the amount to time it is shown to say 10 seconds?

5 seconds is never enough time to get the gist of what is being said and I don't always want to have to click in to read it (my webpages don't load instantly!)

  • Can't help I'm afraid but I would also like an answer to this if there is one.

I don't know how to change this setting in IE, or even if you can at all. Firefox does not have this timeout so stays visible for as long as you have the mouse over the post.

If you're searching the internet for it then what we're talking about here is called a "tool tip".

Well I'm using Firefox 3, and I only get about 5 seconds to read before it disappears. I wonder whether you have a different setting somewhere. I've looked through Options and can't see anything obvious.

Interesting Hungerdunger. I'm using Firefox 2 here so can't do a direct comparison.

Type 'about:config' in the address bar and see if there's any settings in there that look relevant. I couldn't find any in Firefox 2 but you never know, they may have added it in 3.

Bearing in mind that I'm a bit out of my depth with about:config, I couldn't see anything. I used the filter to try to find anything with the words "tool" or "tip" but nothing relevant came up.

Edit: I've just looked at the Firefox forums, and this issue has been raised a couple of times, but no solution given.

  • I think it's more to do with Vbulletin settings than anything we can do.

It's probably something you'll have to raise with the board admin.

The duration of the tooltip is determined by Firefox and has nothing to do with the board.

Having said which, the purpose of tooltips is to display a short description of the link or image you're pointing to, so it shouldn't be used to display such a lot of information really. It would probably be better if VBulletin used a javascript popup instead.

(I found a thread on the Firefox site about it but not much help there).

I use Safari and have the same problem - looking forward to resolving this !
  • I hover over post, take a "Screen Print" and then paste it into Paint. I've set a shortcut to Paint as Ctrl+Alt+P to start Paint quickly - Right click on Paint in Menu and select Properties, on Shortcut tab in Shortcut key: box hold down Ctrl+Alt+P then click OK.

Not an ideal solution but it works.

You can always "de-hover" then "re-hover" to pick up where you left off (hovering much better than tool-tipping (ooo-er missus) imho...).

Incidentally, with Firefox 2, mine only showed the first line (possibly first 128 characters), but FF3 shows a lot more (similar to IE).
