To be honest you are onto a loser. A YP Railcard has ALWAYS had a minimum fare before 10am
I can assure you that when railcards were first introduced in the 1980s there was none of this minimum fare rubbish.

Are you going around replying to very old posts to bump up your post count by any chance?

If you are going to try and be smart then get your facts right first. It was first introduced in the mid 70s (not 80s) and offered 50% of the then eqivilent of full price fares. Minimum fares have always applied - when it was launched they applied at ALL times, not just the peak.

Nope, I had been asked to look at this thread.

From my recollection, the family railcard came first, but that was a long while ago. I am 99% positive that there weren't minimum fares back under BR - but I never had the pleasure of working for them so I'm not sure.

The Family Railcard came along five years after the (what is now) Young Persons card.

When the Student Railcard was launched in 1974, the minimum fares were 50p and £1 (single and return) - which IMO was quite high, but having said that, it was designed for long distance travel.
  • I think its wise at this point to bring in learned lessons from the many rail staff and spotters forums around the Interweb

(For the benefit of those that might be wondering.... yes its the same Psycho)

BR was BR. A Nationalised company that had a remit to carry passengers. Dr Beeching in the 1970's was charged with the task of trying to cost -NEUTRALISE the railway.

Privatisation happened. A private company has a remit to make profits and keep the shareholders happy......

    Nuff said?
