See we are all different, i prefer long grain but do use basmati. I soak for at least half and hour, then drain. Heat some oil in a pan, boil the kettle. put the rice in the pan, stir quickly to coat the grains in oil, so they fizz and crack. straight away add some boiling water, give a little stir. leave to boil till cooked. drain.

This method should work with any rice. Also very MSE with power use.

2-3oz rice per person, rinse 3 times.
Put this in a saucepan with a good lid, cover with cold water up to your first knuckle & add salt. Cover pan with foil & put lid on top. Bring to the boil & fast simmer for five minutes. Turn off the heat & leave for a further 20 minutes. Do NOT remove the lid until this time is up. Fork through & serve.

seems a lot of experts--i taught loads of women in Brasil who couldnt cook rice

Really bring the water to boil in the pan--til its bubbling.--put in the rice and bring back to boil. then simmer for the time stated on the packet of the rice(it varies)---it worked for me because my ex wife divorced me on the grounds of 'overfeeding her' so she must have eaten it all up!!

I used to have a problem but that was when I used the economy long grain, I am much more relaxed about rice these days I dont rinse the rice first but use the same method as Cleggie and always use a well known brand.

Get the water boiling, pour in the rice, give it a good stir to make sure its not sticking and turn the heat right down to barely a simmer, don't stir it too much!! Leave to simmer, after approx 7mins test 1 grain to make sure the "bite" has gone, drain and rinse with boiling water from the kettle - et voila!!

I could never get to grips with the 1 1/2 water to rice combo, closed lid method it always ended up too sloppy or almost burnt.

Also rice is one thing that I haven't gone for the cheaper option on my preference is the Tild! Basmati - Good Luck

I have exactly the same problem, no matter which rice I use it always goes wrong, so I bought an electric steamer, result - perfect rice every time. I use the rice dish that came with it, add one cup of rice, one and a half cups of water and switch on, 40 mins later its done.

    I do it differently again.

I use 1 cup of rice to 1 pint of stock( Marigold) Put rice in saucepan - add stock and then cook on low heat for about 10 mins without stirring until stock is absorbed. Works every time.

If you try to touch the rice while cooking it breaks up the starch and makes it claggy! This is enough for 2 people- double it for 4 etc.

I cook it like you would pasta. Put it in boiling water, simmer for about 12-15 minutes, drain it thru a sieve, and voila, ready to serve :)

That's the basic way of doing it. If you use brown rice it'll take longer (about half an hour) and you might want to rinse it with boiling water when you strain it.

I don't really measure quantities but as a rough guide I find a mug full of rice is enough for 2 people.
