    I've been Money Tipped!
When baking I use reconstituted dried milk in recipes.

When the kettle has boiled the surplus boiled water goes into a thermos for the next cuppa.

Make 1 teabag do 2 cups.

I freeze all leftover veg and gravy into 1 pot (freezer fairy) in the freezer and make a surprise soup with the contents when full (1 free meal)

Never throw away bread, make breadcrumbs, freeze in bags and use for treacle tarts, stuffings, apple betty puds etc.,

Wash most plastic bags for re use in the freezer.

Use yogurt pots, marge containers etc for seedlings.

Use larger marge containers for freezer.

Use cheap washing up liquid for most cleaning jobs, just apply and leave for a while then wipe clean.

Collect and save freebie sugar and use with flask while travelling.

Cut old towels down for dish or floor cloths.
Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

  • I use the waxy inserts from cereal packets etc to cut out circles of and use with a burger maker to seperate the homemade burgers. If you use boxes of tissues, the bit you tear out makes a good shopping list. My mum always cut up any tea bag boxes, cereal boxes etc to use for lists and writing on.
I'm considering getting one of those paper brick makers to use all my shredded paper as it can't be recycled.
i make a lot of cakes/fruit on a sunday when we have a roast dinner and they do most of the week for packed lunches.
Have been buying reduced priced cream to make butter.
i use the envelopes that come with junk mail to post stuff through to the bank when they're closed or stick a label over (got a load free) to resend - however i do pay the postage - i stick another label over the prepay thing and pop a stamp on it.
take my own plastic bags when i go to lidl/netto - you should see the juggling act when i don't remember them - no way am I going to pay for a plastic bag. I also use them as dustbin bags.
I read my local newspapers online, which saves me over £70 a year roughly.
Can't think of any more at the moment.

Don't you have to put something extra as lining in the bottom? Most of the bags here have holes punched round the base.

I usually use a huge roll of tie-top bin liners from Costco, relatively cheap and use a suggestion from Maureen Lipman (I think it was - on the radio). She uses 3 liners in the bin, one inside the other and takes them out one at a time when they are full. Doesn't save money, just time. The Costco ones are in a flat roll (like a Cumberland sausage!) and it just sits neatly on the shelf and you pull them out from the middle.

Buy baby cotton wool on a roll instead of cosmetic cotton wool. These are in 2 different aisles in my supermarket. "Baby" stuff is loads cheaper and I can't tell the difference.

When I go to the supermarket (usually Lidl or Tesco), I think...all that salt in the food...all that sugar in the food...all that packaging...all that fat (anything more than 3%)..all the pesticide in the fruit and veg....and this helps to keep the bills down.

Use an old odd sock on your hand to dust with.

I buy cooking salt instead of table salt which is more expensive. Might be a little coarser, but not enough to bother me.

I have a large bucket in the conservatory, in which I save up the dishes.
Then fill a kettle with rainwater and do the 'washing up' twice a week, and again when the water is hot for the clothes washing.
Don't do a lot of heavy duty cooking so things stay simple and grease free.
  • I don't have much leakage with the plastic bags - not all of them have whole - I save those really thin ones than rip by the time you get home for the ones that have holes - I chuck the ripped bags away first so they 'line' the bottom of the bin bag.
