I dont know how many of you know this story, but, Micheal Shields has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for an attack that another man has signed a confesion too.
Update here ---> http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/merseyside/4421362.stm
This is an utter disgrace can you imagine being in his shoes?
I wouldnt accept a FREE holiday to that country now, I have only ever heard bad news about the place anyway.
They are more than happy to take our money from holiday makers yet this is how they see fit to treat us.
If it happened to him it can happen to you or me.

Our thoughts are with Mr Shields and his family at what looks like a travesty of justice!
As a point of interest, Bulgaria is a beautiful country and their cheap prices and keen focus on tourism make it an ever-popular destination for British holidaymakers0 -

Wasn't the confession ignored because it turned out that the 'other' guy had been in the same town but the Bulgarian's and victims proved he'd also thrown a brick, but at somebody else in a separate incident?0 -
I think its an utter disgrace that
a) Yobs like that go from Britain to another country and behave with utter disrespect and commit murder
and
b) That the person who admits to this crime hasn't got the courage to turn himself in, go to Bulgaria, face the music and free this 'innocent' person.
I think the whole thing reflects worse on Britain than Bulgaria. There is a family there mourning a son who would be alive if these yobs hadn't killed him.
I can see other countries in the world with worse records for human rights than Bulgaria yet there is no call for a boycott of them.qui tacet consentire -

If you get a free holiday for Bulgaria in that case, I'll take it of your hands if you are not going to use it."An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0 -

The man was convicted in a Court of Law where all the evidence was heard by a Judge. AFAIK the confession was deemed inadmissable due to the way it was written and served to the court. It would have been inadmissable in the UK too.
Why do we Brits automatically assume that other countries are unable to administer fair justice especially when the party found guilty is British?
Why not concentrate in educating our own youth to respect other countries peoples and customs?0 -

By the same token therefore,it would be ok for Brazilians to boycott Britain because
of the danger of innocent people being shot dead by our Police on a London tube.
Or the Irish saying that the Guildford Four, and the Birmingham six mistrials means they should boycott us too.
In the last few years our judicial system has been denuded of many safeguards built up since Magna Carta. The right to silence:the right to trial by Jury in certain cases;and the removal of double jeopardy combined with retrospective action.Don't even get me started on the Antiterror laws.Heaven knows what action would have been taken if it had been Tony Blair and his Cabinet who were bombed in Brighton rather than Mrs Thatcher's.
In fact when you look at some of our motorong laws-forced to inform on the driver when your car is parked for two minutes over the allotted time,or forced to admit guilt when you were the driver, not to mention an automatic fine ot £120 if caught in Kensington, regardless of ability to pay and the fact that you have probably been
ticketed by some semi illiterate who could not qualify for a proper job and who is paid on results .Hmmm......maybe we should all boycott Britain.
When our own legal system is far from perfect, why should we boycott another country, where they have had a trial, and the victim positively identified his assailant. We do not know the full story of what happened in that Court, but if there is a
double jeopardy law in Bulgaria, the admission of guilt by his friend could be
questionable
I have no way of knowing whether the lad is guilty or not,but a boycott of the country does not appear to be a valid action since there is at least 50% possibility that he is guilty.Should I wish to visit Bulgaria,I see no reason for that verdict to dissuade me from going.0 -
Theres no possibilty hes guilty the other lad has admited it!!
The reason they deem it inadmissable is for some reason a written admission is'nt good enough. They have to attend court.
Oh and well done those who seem to think cos he was their its his fault. I'm sure you'd adopt that atitude if it happend to you or yours (I hope it does).
The reason I picked this was because a written admission of guilt has been ssubmitted by the offenders lawyer but the Bulgarian courts cant get him unless he goes there.
So their answer? Find the 1st person get a false witness and send him down instead.
And yes if I do get a free holliday ther 'Pin' I will let you have it.
Its a cheap arsed place full of British chavs, enjoy.0
