greyskittle, at least you are being constructive by advising on which areas are good and which are bad instead of saying don't go anywhere in the whole area.

I acknowledge there are good areas and bad areas.

By the way I love North Yorkshire, my wee one was born in Northallerton, just wanted to clear that up.
Excited for Florida - May 2012 :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I never said there was no crime or chavs in Geordie Land! but, to say avoid such a large area in case you meet a chav is pathetic!

It is the sweeping, generalisation I find truly offensive.

Would I choose certain parts of Newcastle/Gateshead over Harrogate hell yeah! but, only for my own personal reasons for example excellent transport links for my family to visit. I am sure Harrogate is a lovely place but, there are plenty of other nice places.

As for your comments on the metrocentre where do I begin. I drop my wee one off at nursery on a week day and pop to said establishment where I have a very pleasant couple of hours browsing in the many shops and stopping off for a starbucks. I have never in my four years had a bad experience in the metrocentre.

Okay point taken. My statement as you said was a sweeping generalisation. Of course there will be very nice parts of the NE, Jesmond has had quite a few reccomendations here already.

All i was trying to say to the O.P, is that N.Yorkshire (As it's very close to the NE of the cities above) is certainly worth a look into. I would describe it and reccomend it higher than what i would of the NE cities. That's only personal opinion though and i am only 1 voice here out of many thousands;)

I live on the Yorkshire coast and you cant beat waking up, opening the curtains and looking out to sea. Friendly people too, a bit of a buzz in the holiday season, and chav count (!) quite low.

Though I am from Durham City and that was nice if a bit quiet.
Cogito ergo sum. Google it you lazy sod !!

Just as a note, Shropshire was by far the worst for rudeness and arrogance (No i'm not from there haha)

Were just simple country folk ...Not used to outsiders .

If your looking to move up north, don't head up as far as Durham / Sunderland / Newcastle. Quite a lot poverty/problem areas with not so nice people, chavs, unemployment etc

Best place you could move to that would fit your criteria, i.e schools, nice area, friendly etc has to be York and Harrogate.

Probably the nicest part of the UK especially for people that are very friendly.

Cant believe you can make such a statement unless you have lived in these areas yourself. Where do you live?

I know these areas pretty well and yes there are some not so nice area, but there are some very good areas and housing estates across the north east. Like anywhere in the UK there are some good areas and some bad places.

I live in the North East, nowt wrong with it really.
  • Mitchaa - Harrogate or Ponteland? York or Darras Hall?

    Answers on a postcard.
  • I'm originally from the North East, though I've not lived there for many years.
My family are still there and I visit regularly. I was born and brought up in Tynemouth - which was a nice place for child to be brought up - the beach just a few minutes walk away, the station (now a metro) just a few minutes walk, went to Priory school, which was a good school and looks like it still is.

    Cullercoats, quite nice but quiet.

My mother was from Cramlington, we visit my aunt there, it's not somewhere I would like to live, it's a vast housing estate with a shopping centre and a leisure centre.

Killingworth a vast housing estate with some shops.

Whitley Bay, one of my sisters lives there, not far from the beach, not too bad, I quite like the town centre as it still has streets with shops on.

Newcastle, fine for a city but wouldn't want to live in it.

Longbenton, I used to work there (didn't everyone), but I wouldn't want to live there.

North Shields, used to go there a lot for shopping, but the last time I was there it seemed pretty run down, it could have changed though.

Wallsend - ok, but wouldn't want to live there.

Gateshead, used to be a dump, but haven't been there for quite a few years.

We are looking to move back in the next couple of years and will be looking a bit further away from North Tyneside / Blyth Valley where it's a bit more peaceful and less built up, possibly Matfen, Corbridge, perhaps Hexham, there are quite a few places we would like to look at.

As someone said it's a huge area and doesn't just comprise of Newcastle, it's surrounds on both sides of the river and the coastal area, there are some truly beautiful places to live just a few miles away.

I think you'll find my statement holds a lot of water to the unbiased eye;) No crime or chavs in Geordie land wye aye man:D You're having a laugh;)

Northeners are typically a lot more welcoming and friendlier than their southern counterparts, i definitely agree. However, the NE is rife with poverty, there are higher numbers of people on benefits, more people out of work, there is more crime, there are a lot of chavs (1 foot into the metrocentre for confirmation) wages are low, some housing estates resemble Beirut, i can go on and on.

Yes there are chavs, crime and unemployed everywhere but in comparison to the 2 places i've mentioned, Harrogate and York, they are leagues apart from their neighbours 60 miles north. Geordies and macams are friendly and welcoming people, all northeners are though.Im going to get a lot of abuse solely from the NE amongst you but to anyone not from the area, they'll agree with me on how nice the places ive mentioned are:D

We are all entitled to our opinions and i suspect if you asked 1 million random people from areas outwith the NE to choose between Harrogate/York Or Newcastle/Sunderland, all 1 million would choose Yorkshire;)

Oh and i'm from the genuine NE of the country ;) (Britain not England)

Just as a note, Shropshire was by far the worst for rudeness and arrogance (No i'm not from there haha)

    Over and out:D

I have lived in a lot of places in GB.

My experiences have taught me that, people who have to tell you how friendly their area is compared to other areas, are the same people that are very chip-on-the- shoulder type people.

I loved Newcastle and the people, hated York (too many chip on the shoulder types and I found York to be too dirty and crime ridden) and hated Scotland (too many aggressive types in the way they talk and act towards others and very chip on the shoulder). I loved Lancashire and Wales too, but I prefer the south as the people don't suffer fools gladly.

That's your opinion but god how does it differ to mine.

The south is renound for people being stuck up their own ar*e, people who think nothing exists outside the boundaries of the M25 etc. I spent 4 yrs of my life there, i actually enjoyed my time there, met lots of nice people, incl my partner and would move back there. Certain people can be rude i suppose especially the further you go in towards London but you learn to live with that.

Scottish people have a worldwide reputation as being welcoming and friendly. They also have a reputation for being violent and drunk, it depends on where you go but i would say welcoming and friendly far outshines the violent and drunk.

As to your comparison to York vs Newcastle:rotfl: York is dirty and crime ridden in comparison to Newcastle:rotfl: Are you being serious are you having a giraffe:confused: Some parts of Newcastle honestly do resemble Baghdad. I think you've lost all credibility with that statement.

I would hazard a guess to say you are probably 1 million times more likely to be a victim of crime in Newcastle than to what you would be in York. Poverty is rife in some parts of Newcastle, poverty brings trouble, fact!

Looks like you have a chip on your shoulder thinking i have 1 on mine:D

    I'm a complete neutral.
