Need for Money saving Database ?

  • @ wolfman: i hear you on the "central database idea", it making people a little nervous about me seeing details...but i suppose there could be a online AND offline version, so if people dont have access and want to use it, they can...

My only problem is when i do a update...As the way access works with tables etc its hard to update things and not loose data. Im thinking of a back end database for all of the stored info and then a "cosmetic" database with all of the reports you can do.

I will get a web site up and running for it fast so people can be updated!
  • Hi. Just a update...

Yeah good point. An online database for storing all the variables and types so you could easily update them, and then the user stores their information locally.

Ideally it's suited to a window's form application, much like Microsoft Money is, and it'd have an updater built in, but you're going down a complex path there.

  • Its going to be very basic to start with. I will make it 2 databases to start with so people just update the visual side of it. I would like some ideas for things like reports... how to sort the recipts/items.
I have got a few, sorted by things like who bought what etc... (if theres 2 people using the same database i.e. a couple)
the website is: http://www.sgoffe.co.uk - i will be uploading some screenshots fairly soon, to hopfully get some positive feedback
  • Screenshots Up!

Looks good. Quite simple and easy to use, can get the jist of it from the screens.

Maybe work on the interface in terms of layout a little, just polish it up, have it looking consistent and easy to follow throughout. You can usually find some interesting articles on the web about stuff like that, it's quite an artform (why I'm no longer a designer :)).

Being able to categorize, and create your own expense types etc... is very handy as it will change between user. May be good to have a few default ones setup though for people who don't want to set them up. The reports look good too.

From the look of things, would ideally suit a windows form kind of application. That would be a good step once you've got this done, as it takes away the need for any 3rd party software (ie Access). Chuck it all in a nice installer etc...

Easiest solution would be Java and Eclipse to build it in. Or C# and Visual Studio if you have access to it. May be a lot of work though if you're new to that kind of development.

  • Thanks. Im just trying to get the back end working well before i release it, then i can work on design etc.. The designs are pretty constant at the moment..but do need improving. I Want it to be dynamic per user, hence the options for everything.

I want to get people on the band wagon before developing C etc. Get it a bit furthur in terms of useability. I would just like to get some people on the site for more feedback and some revisiting people so i know i can release it, and get it used stright away.

Any thoughts on a name? Its not really "money saving" as its FREE!! but it is a tool to help with the management of money ....

Before you buy Google Nest or British Gas Hive check out ESPproMon the Android and iOS Smartphone app that helps you build the same system from just £30.

Sounds great. An Access db version would be ideal since it's so powerful, customizable and reasonably easy to use.
  • i was thinking of something like "money managing database" but i suppose i need a name.... not just "something" database.
