Need for Money saving Database ?

With me wanting to save as much money as possible and being in the IT business i thought i would put my skills to some good use!
Im creating a Access database that you can enter in a purchase (or recipt) along with indervidual items assigned to that purchase ammount etc.
I have got a few different details per purchase/item such as - "payment type", "shop", "type". This is so you would be able to break down your monthly shopping into different shops or "types" of spending as you wish.
I was customizing this for my self, and thought of all MSE's (lovly arn't I!) and thought it maybe wise to offer it to other people with the ability for slightly less techinally minded people to still be able to customize things to there needs...
Would many people take advantage of such as thing? it would also be possible for it to all be web based, if you didnt have access, so everything is entered online and you just press a button and can generate reports.

Maybe this is in the wrong place?
Can a Mod please move it, if it is?
Thanks

I think this is a fabulous idea. I'm not sure I would have the technical know how to be able to create it myself - nor use an access database on my mac
- but it's a really good thought.
Would help lots of people who are trying to watch their spending but are rubbish with writing things on bits of paper.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 002 :rotfl:0 -
ooh! and another thought - would be good for small business people (like me!) who work on their own from home when tax return time comes round ....Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 002 :rotfl:0

thats the 1 problem... its in Access. And most "cheaper" pc's wont have it.
Hence why i suggested a web version, which uses the database behind the sences.
I have made it for me... but would like to know people would benifit from it before i spend time on it!0 -

I'm sure alot of people would benefit from it - me being one
I've not used access in donkey years, this sound like a great idea. Keep us posted if you decide to do it! As said above, thanks for being so considerate

Could you make it in one of the free databases? or the one supplied with microsoft works, so that lots of people would be able to use it without using expensive programs?
I think its a great idea whatever you do with it.Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults0 -
I dont know if its possible to make it a inderpendent program (IE, works without access etc)
I have spent some time doing it over the weekend.
Its very basic at the moment, but i think i will release it, then get feedback from people a s time goes on, and release new versions every month.0 -
I would definitely benefit from it!! Many thanks in advance!

Or if it's on a per machine basis (not on a web server) you could just use Xml.
One thing you do have to watch with a centralised web system, if you're running it (and you seem like trustworthy guy), is that people may be a little paranoid as to storing there spending breakdown on such a server.
Also depending upon the size of the audience you are aiming it at you may want to consider Sql Server (expensive license though) or MySql (free) as access isn't really built for large numbers of users."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
If you can, have a look at Sage - a business accounting package - for ideas as this does much the same thing (except for businesses) - you may notice some useful features which would be worth copying
