i asked my not so nice landlord for a bed/mattress and got one! its worth asking them, as they will keep it for the next people after you leave.

Especially since they can usually charge more rent for a room with a double bed in rather than single!

I wouldn't necessarily rely on definitely being able to sell it at the end of the year. in his last year at uni my bf moved into a partly furnished house and he and his 5 mates had to all buy beds and desks, and together bought a washing machine too. When time came to move out, they agreed with the new tenants they would pay however much to leave all the beds, desks and the washing machine for them; day came to move in and the incoming tenants just refused to pay, assuming the guys wouldn't be able to move such big things without notice (there was a small ford fiesta between them, if I remember correctly...).
Well they were right... they had to leave everything there, but one of the more brazen guys had taken a sneaky copy of the front door key before handing over the keys, came back two days later with his dad and his dad's van, when the tenants weren't there, let himself in, took the beds, desks and washing machine, leaving piles of sheets, duvets, computers etc on the floor and a pile of wet washing on the kitchen floor!!!

anyway just something to bear in mind!!
