    Nothing doing with the fixes Browntoa. having spoken to my DD, I think she has unleashed a virus onto pc last night. Something called trojan Downloader.gen, I gather this could be a rather nasty problem.

    if you can use firefox then

    Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
    alternate download link 1
    alternate download link 2
    • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
    • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
    • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
      • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
    • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    • On the Scanner tab:
      • Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
      • Then click on the Scan button.
    • The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
    • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
    Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

    I came across this programme just after I posted, I followed the steps and it did its business so I have the previos log where it shows what has been quarantined and deleted. looking at it there were literally thousands of entries for Casino Joyland. if I was to paste it on here I would wipe out a large number of pages with the results so I have pasted an edited version

    Database version: 1062
    Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2

    16:27:28 24/08/2008
    mbam-log-08-24-2008 (16-27-20).txt

    Registry Values Infected:
    (No malicious items detected)

    Registry Data Items Infected:

    (This was the area for the thousands of entries from casino Joyland)

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Common\wuauclt.exe (Trojan.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\phcro1j0ee0n.bmp (Trojan.Downloader) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\delself.bat (Malware.Trace) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

    Thanks for all your prompt replies Browntoa, I was all set to throw out the pc prior to my first post. I have already run ccleaner as I do on a daily basis. Now I know what the inside of a pc looks like and how easy it is to upgrade the ram, this will be my next task. Once again thank you.
  • This is a great forum, how is the PC repair business in England? I live in Miami Florida USA, I used to have a PC business, but things got to slow, too many people started to learn how to fix it themselves. Now I started a moving company which will help people to find movers or just guys that help you to load your own trucks. It is for all 50 US States, I wonder if I could do the same for the UK? it is http://www.movicompservices.com

    Is there any place that has more info on how to save money by moving your own furniture instead of paying a big moving van line company? I will help you guys if you ever move to the USA.

    Cheers.
