sounds like a hardware failure, those are bios beeps
is it single beeps or one long one ??
what make.model PC is it ??
might be worth opening the case up , blowing out any dust and unplugging any RAM, Graphics cards etc and reseating themEx forum ambassador

you need to work out what bios you have, mine normally says Award as it first boots up , can you remember anything like that ??
then count the beeps and see what it meansEx forum ambassador

I recomend phoning the manufacturer and asking; thats what I did to help fix my cousins Dell vostro 200 they told me to put the phone next to the PC and they told me that it was ram failure (forgot how many beeps), took the ram out, put it back in everything was back to normal.0

will do , it's the motherboard saying somethings dead and I'm not playing any more
try my suggestion of reseating all the components
if you have 2 sticks of RAM in it try taking one out at a time and trying it, may be one stick of RAM thats diedEx forum ambassador

Thanks Browntoa, took a peek inside the pc and was horrified to see how much dust was in there. I cleaned it all up, removed the ram (proud achievement) replaced it and fired up the computer. All seemed to be going ok, went through the windows xp logo to main page but no task bar or icons appeared and I was unable to do anything further. Booted up in safe mode ok. Went off safe mode and booted up again still nothing. I ran task manager, went through the 'file' tab and clicked new task to start up Firefox and it loaded. Still no task bar or icons and don't know how to retrieve them. Any ideas ?0
