Cats and leads

Options
I have a cat that I think is an Egyptian Mau. She is an indoor cat, as I live in a flat without access to a garden, however I have read that Maus are one of the few breeds that take to being walked on a lead.

Has anyone any experience of doing this, and would it benefit her in any way? I live in a city, and there are a lot of dogs around ...

hiya when we first got our jessie may i used to walk her round the garden on a lead with a harness, first few times i coaxed her into it with treats and playing but after that she was fine and she was just over a yr old when we got her from rescue, i only did it for a couple weeks till she got used to our garden as its quite large and dogs all around so wanted her to be aware before i let her out on her own

lol you can have cats on leads no problem, my mums cats are berman, she had them on a thin lead to begin with to get them used to the garden, and its proved really good since as they dont venture out of it,altho she does tend to be outdoors when they are, theyre older than 5 yrs now, so they werent fussed by having leads on them, gd luck with yours x

When I was a kid we found ourselves having to take our ordinary Moggy with us in a touring caravan along with the dogs at short notice (cattery had an outbreak of cat flu!) He was always used to following us on the dogs walks round the block, and took to a harness (introduced at home with plenty of distractions) and then a lead (introduced in a similar way after a few days) very quickly - only problem we had was when a strange dog took a dislike to him and he took a cats normal escape route - straight up a Poplar tree!
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

i tried to train my siamese to walk on a lead, but did it all wrong, he just flopped over on his side, would not budge, and looked at me as if to say 'Are you mental, woman!?'

i have since read the proper way to train for lead-walking...not sure he is young enough now to accept it though.

i used to take my rabbit out on a lead all the time though :)

My cat loved her harness. We used it to get her used to the garden before giving her complete freedom.

All of my 3 kitties "play out" with a harness on attached to a lead. I don't want to let them out completely in case they get run over and they're all quite happy as long as they get out into the garden for a bit.

I tried my cat with one of these: http://www.catwalkingjacket.com/ (through eBay), and had some success - it's sturdy enough that I wasn't worried he'd get tangled or be able to escape, but I think he's not much for leash walking, and I felt far too self concious!

  • we have a few cats. and live on a farm, when its really busy i take cats for walks on leads,as darent let them run around massive vehicles. they are quite happy to do this. we also recently had a feral decide to live with us,so i put him on lead also, and he loves it he obviously feels special after being feral for a year and a half. runs alon tail bolt upright.
THANKS to everyone who posts competitions. you are all :A.
