Mercers Debt Collections

Last Saturday I received a letter saying that Barclaycard had passed on my arrears of £298.76 and to contact them about this. I'm currently unemployed living with my parents and unable to pay this so I didn't phone them. This morning a man came to my door banging and banging and stayed for what seemed like ages, I don't answer the door to people I don't know. He eventually pushed through a card my door with my account details. He said he'll call back later - I'm just really scared because my parents do not know how much trouble I'm in.

I'm really scared about what I can do I have no way of paying this back and am scared that he will keep coming back to me. This is just the tip of my debts and I am so scared now that the other credit cards will be coming after me and I just don't know what to do about it.

I would be so grateful if someone could help me because I just don't know what I can do.

  • Amy, I am sorry to hear abouttroubles you have. Not much advice to offer as I am no expert, but I wanted to show my support and keep your post on first page so that clever people around here see it :)

Mercers is Barclaycard.Contact the National Debtline for advice.Once this has happened Barclaycard will refuse to deal with you because they'll claim you are now with Mercers, and then Mercers will do the same. I have had an issue that has grumbled on for years-Barclaycard have now lost my details and changed the account numbers, they only admitted two years ago that my 'Mercers' account had been them all along. This is an extremely sticky pudding. If you get contacted by a 'solicitor' or 'debt collection agency' always check Companies House as to who they are ownedby/connected to.

Contact the National Debtline (make sure it is the charity )-free to e-mail or ring up. List all your debts and talk to them about what to do.The doorstep people are trespassing and you can write to the agency and remind them of this, they do not have permission to enter your property.

a)Don't be bullied or panicked-the agencies rely on this
b)Keep to Debtline advice to the letter
    c) Don't be compelled to ring up (they just love this).Keep EVERYTHING in writing , get receipts for all letters sent, keep all documents
d)Work out what you can realisitcally pay-the Debtline will help you with this as well
Ensure that you always meet priority debnts first.
e)Get interest frozen so that you really are paying off the amount owed
F)Face up to the situation asap interest/charges will make matters worse

    Good luck

Barclaycard/Mercers were one of my worst creditors. They sent someone to me too. Since his visit, I've heard nothing more from them and they've finally accepted my payments.

If he does call back, do not let him in and tell him that if he doesn't leave then you will call the police. They have no legal rights and cannot take any of your property.

You need to sort out all your statements etc so that you know exactly where you are. It's scary at first but once you have done this, it's also a relief and you can start to get the ball rolling. I know it's hard but it may be worth mentioning it to your parents, as no doubt they will support you through it.

In the meantime, it may be worth writing to all your creditors to explain your situation and offer them token payments until you can get back on your feet again.

Also speak to CCCS and CAB - neither will charge you - and see what the way forward is.

    Good luck and keep posting.

Couldn't agree more with this post. The other creditor that was dreadful in my case was the Co-op Bank-ruthless and uncommunicative.
Be warned with Barclaycard also that they pass you around from office to office and lose your files, they will also lose the account numbers.Ringing them doesn't work because you get passed from one call centre to the other, none of them with a link to the original offices.
In my case I paid for a service from a trader that was investigated by Interpol/Companies House/DTI/Fraud Squad/Watchdog -you name it. In the middlel of the diuspute I was passed on to Mercers who disclaimed all knowledge of it and carried on threatning. In despair I carried on paying .EIGHT years later I was rung by Barclaycard re the debt and was cheerfully told that Mercers had been them all along ! So they'd used this as a way out of the Consumer Credit Act-and they've now scrambled up all the account numbers. so there's a maze of chaos that they refuse to clarify.

They were a complete pain with me - refusing to accept my dmp, sending a guy round when they were in default of my CCA request so the debt was in dispute then, and then denying all knowledge of my dmp and any letters that I had sent. After I sent a stroppy letter with copies of all correspondence to them and copied in Trading Standards they magically produced something. They also left abusive messages on my voicemail at work and being abusive to me at work. I work in a call centre and often colleagues listen in. In normal circumstances I would be a bit annoyed about other people knowing my financial details but on this occasion I was quite pleased as it resulted in their calls being recorded and my boss writing a very strong letter to Mercers/BC about harrassment of his staff. They soon stopped after that. Not heard from them since May.

    Thanks for all the responses.

What is it that Mercers are after me for is it simply the arrears or will they be wanting me to pay the full balance in time?

Earlier today I found myself searching for information on what would happen to my debts if I were to die. I just feel constantly sick with the worry of it all and I'm not sleeping. My parents are currently away on holiday and I just feel so alone with it all.

Do some of the places mentioned above help me get into contact with Mercers? I am very worried that they will pressurise and bully me, I have very little confidence in myself and am so scared of what they will do to me. Also the thought of it being a bank holiday weekend scares me because it is another day less being able to deal with this.

Thanks for any help I just don't know where else to turn

Amy listen. You have taken the first step and posted here. You have been really brave acknowledging that you have some problems and you want to sort them out.

I am not an expert and I am sure someone will post soon so bumping this up.

I too was in a similar situation but it was my husband I didn't tell.

Take a deep breath. Gather all you have re debts together and phone National debtline. I don't have the number to hand but to my knowledge they are open today. Google them (but make sure it is the official site) and get the number. Better still google them on this site and there will be contact details.

Once you have spoken to them and they have been able to reassure you you will feel a lot better.

They will give you lots of advice and support.

After that why not post your soa and creditor details here. Someone with ore knowledge will post up the link.

Hiya. Just found number: 0808 808 4000 but they are not open to phone in today. Will have to wait until Tuesday. Hopefully another member will be able to advise if any of the other debt charities are open today.

Hang in there sweetie and keep checking for new posts on this thread.
