Oil Heating & Expansion vessel

Options
We currently have electric storage heaters in our cottage which we want to replace with oil fired central heating. Our plumber recommends having an expansion vessel but i don't understand the advantages of this - it just appears to be another item to add to the list which also takes up additional space. What's wrong with the old fashioned method ? Does anyone know what this expansion vessel improves ?

There are two types of expansion vessel used by plumbers.

    1. Commonly referred to by most other people as a wallet, plumbers (especially those from Yellow pages) use these vessels to hold huge amounts of cash obtained from, "cash - no VAT" work.

    2. The other is a tank connected to a sealed central heating system to take up the increase in volume of the water in the system when it gets hot. Just like the little expansion tank under the bonnet of your car connected to the car cooling system.

You can decide which one of these your plumber is referring to ! :D
