expensive handwriting pens for kids - are they worth it?

i would say no.
my son has dyspraxia and is double jointed so i bought a yuropen for him.
as soon as occupational health came to school to assess him they told us not to use it. said it wouldn't do him any favours and that the berol pens that most schools use anyway were better.
he did however follow the teodorescu (google it) which did have an effect.
his writing still isn't great but its better
My eldest also has dyspraxia and the SENCO says it's made a real improvement - LOL - Differing professionals - what a shock - LMAONoli nothis permittere te terere

There are a whole raft of different handwriting "aids" in the form of ruled lines showing where the correct height or depth of a letter should be and giving simple shapes to copy.
I think this works well.
Have you tried making a game of it and seeing who can make the neatest "c" or "p" or whatever and then maybe see how many words they can write neatly copying from a text but still being careful with the 'form' of the words? Maybe the winner could choose some appropriate treat that everyone shares but is their choice? Not a great fan of rewarding just one in a family, after all, we all have our own strengths and for some neat handwriting is a bigger struggle than for others.
My elder daughter -aged about 10- bought herself a Calligraphy pen and taught herself as she got so fed up with being criticised at school! Worked too - she still has great handwriting now - and it didn't put her off study either as she is just completing her PhD! Good Luck.:j0 -

Mine too! My son is dyspraxic and has terrible handwriting problems due to the way that he holds his pen. This has made a real difference to him.0 -
Hello
I would recommend asking the school about using the teodorescu activity packs and switching to cursive writing where all letters start on the line. This combination can often really help children improve their writing.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -

Here here! My DD is dyspraxic, and it was recommended for us, and has made a huge difference!:T0 -
If your children have bad handwriting it's usually because they haven't been taught well at school. Teachers are afraid of being prescriptive in showing them the correct way to hold a pen and some children hold it almost like a wooden spoon!
How old are your children?0 -
LOL @ the differing advice from professionals.......no suprise there then!0

My son had horrible handwriting, and had to get up to a certain standard before being allowed to use a pen- to my surprise they still use fountain s at his school and it has made his handwriting lovely.0

Well done to your school; it's good to see some places still uphold standards. I know my handwriting's much better with a fountain pen!0
