Wow assuming the lens and other features aren't too bad this could be the answer to a decent camera phone although it wont replace a pro camera

Next week Samsung will release the first phone with an eight-megapixel image sensor, producing images of identical quality to most digital cameras.

A photographer for London's Evening Standard newspaper, Alex Lentati, who tested the camera, said: "There are some problems, the screen is not very bright, and there is no zoom. But the image quality is very impressive, much better than I thought it would be."

Megapixels do not, necessarily, a good photograph make. Lenses are at least as important, if not more so once you've passed the 5 megapixel mark.

At the risk of sounding like a luddite, but the chances of this replacing a standalone camera are pretty small for all but the most casual camera users.

Does it come with different lenses for different requirements? Different f-stops?! No zoom range is a bit limiting, are they doing a fish-eye version?! ;):D

Not even on the same page...

Agreed hence why I stated "assuming the lens and other features"

  • Surely it'd be more a replacement for the point and shoot market, rather than anything more advanced?

No hope of taking on vaguely serious photograpers. I'll stick to the respected optics, thanks.

If you want to. It may be a replacement for some occasions for point and click certainly fine to take around, how many of us didnt take our camera and thought that would be nice to take a snap. Well this may be fine for that. Serious camera use no

I have a lovely small Sanyo Xacti camera which is small that takes decent snaps up to 5m and 10x zoom plus video, this has been a godsend when I dont take my dsr about and about.

  • Actually, i only take my DSLR for 'big events' and not out and about, i've got a little panasonic FX33 that I tend to keep around when i want a little camera.

Now, the problem I see is physics and cost. It's going to be very hard to get decent lenses and zoom into a small thin phone. Also, adding the cost of these extra lenses and mechanisms will increase the cost of phones.. are consumers will to pay this extra amount?

My Sony K850 takes an ok shot.. but with no lens cover, i don't trust it to last forever or take consistently decent photos. Plus, the lens is pants

I have a very tiny Ixus digicam, slip into a short pocket, for just quick out and about snaps when I can't take the DSLR - however, although there is an obvious massive gulf in pic quality from the Ixus (with it's small motorised lens) to my DSLR stuff (with pro lenses it's very obvious), the gulf between the Ixus and mobile phones is just as great, I can't imagine any non-dedicated device out-performing a good compact camera from a quality manufacturer.

Most convergence devices are a compromise. But a good camera phone is very useful for the odd snap.

Samsung cannot even make a decent standalone camera, so no hope of incorporating anything decent in to a camera.;)
