If i were the person who lost out, i would be gutted but i wouldn't accept the money.....

That said, for a quiet life and to avoid awkwardness, i would probably just give it... but i'd be the one drawing up concrete rules for future, seems like people are moving goalposts the whole time! and who declared these 2 people the boss of it all!!!

but hey!!! well done on the win!!!!!!!

Maz, i think you hit it on the nose.

not accepting the money would be the right thing to do, or at least accept less or take some of the given money (£130) and spend something (£30?) on a box of chocs for the office or something as a thank you.

i gave in to avoid the awkwardness, but its clear how far the goalposts moved. there was even talk that she could have borrowed money from the petty cash to pay till she got paid! its frightening to think that someone should suggest this (esp since they work in accounts...)

and **MissL2** - yeah, its like that, you work all your days and the moany person in the corner is the one who ends up having what you have without having to spend or work for it.

as for what the money means to me, im more than sure they all know as i've said, and did say when we were being coearced(?) into "giving" the tenner. i'm on roughly half of what *most* folk earn in here, and i can assure you i seem to do plenty more work than most.

At the end of the day if you choose not to join in why should you get anything?
And if you dont pay any money in a given week and your colleagues win why should you get a cut ?

Doomcow, was she in the syndicate previously or subsequently?

If it was just a no-money-that-day moment whereas in other weeks she was always in on it, I'd want to give her something. :D

Otherwise, I'm with you in objecting.

They werent in it before, and they had at least 3 days to get it together to get a fiver in for it.

and no, im not "moaning about the £15", its the principal of it.

its good to get a lift now and again, and i'd rather not get it and the almost instantly get bullied into parting with it by colleages on their moral high-horse.

if i was in the bookies and didnt put £5 on horse X, and then horse X won, i wouldnt expect the bookie to say "well your intention was there to put it on but you didnt so heres your winnings anyway"...

Your experience just clarifies why syndicates are a) a bad idea and b) you must have proper agreed syndicate rules - I believe the the National Lottery provide some guidelines on their web site.

After all if your syndicate had won £4million - how much should you have given to the 'unfortunate ones'

I thanked your post by mistake, I certainly didn't mean to.

    How rude of you.

If you won the lottery would you give money to everyone else who played it so they didn't miss out?

At the end of the day, if you don't play, why should you be entitled to anything, I certainly wouldn't have been very happy if I was in the OP shoes.

Infact, we play euromillions at work every so often, and I have an online account so tend to put it on when we play, yet some people are like 'ooo I've got no change, can you sub me til Monday' etc and I do, but you can garuntee that I never see their £1.50. I'm doing it today, and I am gonna refuse to put in for anyone cos why should I sub people, what on earth would I do if we won? I mean, they couldn't be bothered to give me £1.50, why should I give them their winnings?!
  • I agree with you. Why should you, you took a chance and won! GOOD FOR YOU!

I work in a newsagent with the Lottery, and people say 'if I win, I'll share' and I reply ' just send me a postcard'. At the end of the day, they won, good luck to them!

Several years ago I sold a ticket to a lady and she won over £300,000. I had the great pleasure of telling her, she thought she'd only won a tenner! A few weeks later she came back with her husband, thanked me for my honesty and gave me £300!

I don't begrudge anyone anything, but you need to do whats right in your heart/head. At the end of the day would she/he do the same for you?

    enjoy your win, well done
