Recently at work, we started a lottery syndicate.
on wednesday we put our first lot of tickets on and won a total £3579 - comin in at £275 each
on thursday this was reduced cos the person who set it up decided that we should each put the £5 on for the forcoming saturday draw (something i was against, but i aint gona miss out on it incase we win). - basically he suggested it and then 2 of 13 jumped on the bandwagon and effecitvely bullied the rest of us into paying to it too.
today, friday, the same 2 folk jumped on the 13 of us to "donate" £10 of our winnings to 1 of the 3 people in work who *didnt* pay to play because she couldnt afford it. the other 2 chose not to play in the first place.
personally speaking, i feel robbed.
ok, i dont mind giving them something, but it was the way it was brought about.
why didnt we give money to the other 2 to make it fair since they didnt pay either?
why did i put myself £5 into my overdraft in order to play so i didnt miss out when i could have put nothing in and got given £130?
ok, i know im gona seem like a right scrooge, but i paid my money, i took a chance and i won, why should i be forced to give up my winnings for someone who didnt pay to play like i did on a level playing field?
what if we had won the big bucks - should we give them a proportional cut of that? (say £8mil win: 3.63% of £8mil/13 = £22k from each of us)
i guess this is more of a moral money dilemma - should we give people at work who didnt join in a lotto syndicate a cut of the money?
*frustration vented
, feeling much better (but interested to find out your thoughts)*
note: the other employee earns the same as me and has a similar financial state of affairs as myself - and im the one left being called "cheap" (they could have put the £5 into the pot like me)- maybe we should have something written down in the first place tho...

surely once you've won, the money should be distributed EVENLY to those who invested in it only. then surely it is up to you to decide what you do with the money?
i dont blame you for being angry.Payment a day challenge:
Capital One Credit Card - £7.55/£1306.560 -
first of all, congrats on your win :T
Secondly.....you all had a choice about paying to be a member of the syndicate. Those who did, should keep the money. Those that didn't shouldn't get a share.
Will those that didn't, be paying money to you next week when your tickets don't win and you are out of pocket? Unlikely!!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0 -
You need to get the others to agree to a proper contract regarding lotto.
We did one when we first set up, it was a big company so we had 49 people and if anyone didn't pay then we had reserves who were given the chance so that the same number of lines went on.
There is help on the lottery websites about syndicates as it is a huge problem if not run properly.0 -
we used to do a syndicate. basically the ones who put the money in get the winnings. if they decided to put in the following weeks then so be it if not and other people won then they'd lose out. i certainly wouldn't have been bullied into giving money away when i rightfully won it. If i wanted to give some away then it would be off my own back not cuz someone's jumping on the band wagon and trying to lay the guilt trip0

Always always always have contracts with people you enter into these syndicates with - the lottery and arguments can tear families apart and they're blood!Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!0
-
I agree with those who say you need a contract.
I don't take part in the lottery syndicate at work, and no doubt I'd be kicking myself if they won, but I certainly wouldn't expect anything. Well, you know, a drink or something would be nice if they won big bucks....

Can I have a tenner please?Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -
I bet if you stood your ground and said i'm not giving this person £10, a few more people would do the same. Explain what the money means to you, and how you really need it (assuming people know your situation)
Then maybe buy the girl a bottle of wine or something to say no hard feelings... i know it might cost you a fiver, but save you a fiver in the long run, and really it's more the principal isn't it.......??
If i were the person who lost out, i would be gutted but i wouldn't accept the money.....
That said, for a quiet life and to avoid awkwardness, i would probably just give it... but i'd be the one drawing up concrete rules for future, seems like people are moving goalposts the whole time! and who declared these 2 people the boss of it all!!!
but hey!!! well done on the win!!!!!!!I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -
I'd be so mad as well! I've had a few similar situations like this in the past... the one that springs to mind is whilst at uni a few of the girls went to Dublin. We all had pt jobs whilst studying apart from one. She was moaning all weekend that she couldn't afford to eat, drink, go to the attractions so one girl said we should all chip in  I was fuming I just thought well it might not be much but I've had to work an evening shift whilst she's been at home watching tv, to fund her weekend away!
To be honest if I was the girl that was skint there's no way I think I could take the money- prehaps if you gave her a lesser amount £50 between you all it would go down a little better.

so what about all the people that enter the lottery each week and dont win???????
all them that do win should have to share it with the ones who didnt bother to play erh!!!!0
