Both of those are per condition policies, where that amount doesn't refresh every year.

Animal Friends is normally not a good policy, because of the 35% excess when >8 years old. Also, I'm pretty sure that their prices have gone up a lot - top cover is £26/month. However, if that £50/month for the rottie wasn't a typo (that's £600 a year!), I'd probably go for it for him. Apparently even when they were underwritten by E&L, they still managed to payout on time, so they're good guys from that POV.

It'll be cheaper to do the others with someone else as Animal Friends have a flat rate premium for any breed (which is why they're good if you have a very expensive to insure breed). You may well have tried them, but if not also look at Halifax, HSBC and NFU (low top cover on that last, but may be sufficient). Don't worry too much about cashback and don't get suckered by 1 month free offers that make the first year cheaper than following ones.

the 35% excess is the ONLY thing putting me off with animalfriends - but as I am adopting a 13yo cat, it is about the only company that will offer a good lifetime cover deal with manageable premiums for an oldie pet.

by the way - animalfriends are going to give customers the option to reduce the excess for older animals down to 15% - obviously at a cost, but i have been informed that when they introduce this option that existing customers will be allowed to benefit from it and switch their policy without penalty. the director of animalfriends has also been on these boards himself and has mentioned this in the following thread

if you call AF ask them about this, they will be more than happy to explain it.

i wish PetPlan did good policies for oldies - i have been with them for years with various pets (from when they were babies) and they have been brilliant. if they offered a good policy for an oldie they would be my first choice.

PS - I just got a quote from Halifax insurance...£58 A MONTH for a cat!!! Petwise was £84 a month!!! That costs more than my own health insurance!

I've come to this thread a bit late now but for anyone else looking for insurance I'd say it's worth giving NFU a call. I've used them numerous times over the years to insure both dogs and horses and always found them to be very competitive.

I can't see anywhere that you can get a quote online but you can call them for free on 0800 316 4661
