Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Why complain now?

BT have for years and years and years and years charge non-DD customers more than DD customers - that's business - it costs more to administer non-DD accounts / payments. Why should those of us who pay by DD not pay less for our service when it costs less to run it for us?

All other telcos charge, some £5 per month, others £4 per month.

Other than eBico gas and electricity prviders charge non-DD customers a lot more. Although ebico charge the same however you pay, you'll find you can get cheaper electricity elsewhere if you pay by DD.

Many companies don't accept customers unless they pay by DD.

There is no reason not to opt for DD, unless you really are useless at managing money and haven't worked out yet how not to live beyond your means.

LOL @ Close BT account. considering all the other providers charge more for non-DD accounts, I take it you aren't going to have a phone then all that's left to you is a PAYG mobile phone - but then you are paying more for it. Crazy that some people would rather cut their noses off. Surely some plain and simple budegting and money management skills aren't too hard to learn?

Sorry, that's total nonsense. If you don't know why firms are using pricing to manipulate their customer base, there's little point it trying to explain it to you. For the last 20 years I have used something that was quaintly called 'Home Banking' - long before Direct Debits switch to the nonsensical "we take it when we want it and as much as we want" system now in place.

My home banking transferred the finds directly to their bank account, and they received the full benefit of funds with no rake off for credit card commissions or processing fees.

What you appear to forget is that different payment methods were offered to give their customers a choice - there are overheads for everything, so why all of a suddenly are we supposedly now liable for their banking fees?

VM charge me £60 per year extra, yet they receive the full money owed on the due date, and I have asked them to show that it costs them this additional amount but they are unwilling (or most likely) unable to provide this.

So it's off to the Small Claims Court to get it back - it was tried with BT when some hapless solicitor made a cods ear of her action, and made BT crow about their 'legitimacy' of such charging. This I trust will be a false dawn for them.

In the meantime, if you're happy to let anyone have access to your financial affairs, why not send them the keys to your house or flat too?

I've been using Direct Debits for many many many years no problems, just makes life so much easier and saves me money.

It's not all of a sudden you are liable for these fees, for example BT has been charging non-DD customers more for at least 15 years, probably longer, cable has been charging non-DD customers more since cable started up. Electricity companies have for as long as I have been a customer being charging non-DD customers more. All that has happened is many made it more transparent, hence why people are now complaining, yet have always paid more for non-DD (always as in at least the last 15 years or so).

Companies don't just take money by DD without telling you of a change in the payments if payments change. For example you may pay your gas and electric £30 each each month, now if prices change they have to write to you with a revised payment amount before they can take that money, if you don't like that amount you contact them and get the amount change and / or you bank (if you want to stop DDs - these can be stopped straight away online, over the phone or visit the bank)

With the likes of a phone service where your monthly amount varies, this is why you get the bill, so you can check the amounts to make sure it is correct.

DDs just make life so easy, however there are people that lack budgeting and money management skills and haven't learnt not to live beyond their means so worry they may go overdrawn - then maybe they should learn some basic money management skills and make sure they aren't sailing so close to the wind with their bank account.

What I still don't get is why you are some others are complaining NOW when BT have charged non-DD customers more for many many many years.

Previously they inflated the line rental price and then offered a discount for those who paid by DD - maybe you and others simply didn't realise for all these years that DD customers got the discount. Then BT decided to remove the inflated part of the line rental charge and then state it's extra to pay by other means others than DD - just like it always had been for all these many years in the past - just a different way of displaying in. So instead of you line rental being shown on the bill as the inflated price to include the non-DD charge (and offer a discount to it if you paid by DD) they now show the price you would pay if paying by DD with the charge that was previously hidden in the price shown separately.

Now if you can't understand that or simply want to bury your head in the sand or put your fingers in your ears and sing "I'm not listening" then maybe there is little point in explaining to you as it seems you can't comprehend the true facts and happily make up your own facts.
