New Baby Present - Advice needed

  • I think a present that would go down a treat would be a hamper of nice but easily prepared food - perhaps even a box of M&S ready meals! Then get something for the baby when it's home.

I think the M&S ready meals are a really good idea - also a nice bottle of wine might be appreciated by mum or dad
Re the bath smellies - thinking on a purely practical side here, if she had a natural birth she might be avoiding smellies in her bath at the moment and leaning more towards salt!

Get baby a really special little outfit for when he comes home - this is what my best friend did for both of mine and though she hasn't got much of a clue in choosing for babies bless her I was really touched

I would check with the hospital first about flowers, they are not allowed in my local ones?

How about a baby book? The one's with babys newborn credentials, firsts, family, places to put photos in etc. This is something which can be of use straight away.
    Something like this:http://www.ohsocherished.co.uk/shop/product.php/865/84/cute_baby_record_books

Just being her friend will suffice atm, ask her what she needs etc.

Good luck and congratulations to all concerned!

Thanks everyone for your responses. Katyag I appreciate your perspective as I don't have a clue what she is going through, I don't have a maternal bone in my body but very concious that I don't want to be the big insensitive childless oaf around here!!

Now to sound really stupid...where do I get tiny socks from? Mothercare? And when you say tiny, how tiny??

Special K, I'm already there with the baby book. We went away with them for the weekend last month and gave them 'Baby's First Tattoo' as a gift. We kind of figured that other people would buy them baby keepsake books and this was more of an 'us' gift.

I'm going with flowers and a card (and maybe a hamper) for them now and I'm thinking of a nappy cake for when he comes home (didn't know about these until I saw them on MSE this morning!)

Don't worry about not having children. It didn't come naturally for me. When my daughter was born it was like looking at an alien for quite a while, it took a few weeks to feel "maternal". Your present ideas sound ideal, although if she's stuck in the hospital a lot then ready meals etc. as time is thin on the ground when you're running between home and hospital. Depends if family are around for helping with meals etc.

hi ,having been in the situation your friend is in , i appreciated every card i got because it made me feel as though they cared ,

could you offer to help with anything for them eg ,washing or ironing .
the last thing on there mind will be if they have any clean clothes or that the dishes are pilling up .
or even keep mum company to let dad out for a bit or vice versa
i know my dh didnt like to leave me on my own ,so my friend came over to keep me company so he could get out to the pub for an hour believe me the poor dads have a rough time to but no-one seems to think about them .

also adams is good for prem baby things they do the tiniest cutest things
  • only seen your sock question now - when i say tiny, if you go into a shop that sells baby clothes look at their little socks for babies... now imagine smaller lol. The small ones my SIL got for us looked like they wouldnt fit a doll! But they where perfect for DD :)

Hi there hope everyone is doing well - what about a lovely photo frame she could put a picture of the wee one in, I got my sister one when her son was born ten weeks early and she still has it now. For your friend a nice indian head massage or something would go down a treat. Just a thought about the smellies, at the hospital they were discouraged to use anything as smell was one of the most important bonding factor. Good luck,

Our friend has recently had a baby at 30 weeks so we are also in a similar dilemia!

We have decided to send a card now, and wait until little one is home before thinking about gifts.

Unfortunately this mum hasnt had a great history with pregnancies (still borns) so at the moment we are holding off until we know all is well :D
