Cold...Cold Winter Ahead!

I have central heating in my 1 bed flat. I'm going to have lots of cups of tea/soup/hot chocolate, a hot water bottle, I've got plenty of throws blankets and quilts plus I'll use the gym to warm up in their amazing showers and jacuzzi! I want to use absolute minimum minimum heating. Downside is my classroom is a massive draughty (sp) not double glazed high ceiling Victorian affair with radiators that are so old! That means day times aren't gonna be much fun for me...nor is walking to and from work!

Quick question - we have one of those "living flame" gas fires in the lounge/dining room. I said to other half I thought it would be cheaper in winter in the evening to simply put that on rather than having the central heating on. He disagrees....please tell me I'm right
Like everyone else, want to be prepared and try and spend as few pennies as possible
Any advice appreciated. Many thanks.0 -

we just cant afford to put the heating on really our bills are paid monthly DD at a fixed amount and we cant affgord to apy any more the DD's we do have barley cover the bills at the moment and that is with the heating off and now they have just said another price rise!! we couldnt capp as owe about £100 to our current supplyer so had to pay that to change and the one our supplyer was offering was rediculus we wouldnt have saved a thing..... well people managed without heating and much worse conditions im sure we will get over it but its a shame its come to this tho honestly0

I think I have one of those.. total waste of time. I have learnt they are purely decretive, nice flame effect on coals. When my boiler went US, I was hoping it would heat my front room but i remember in an hour it heated the room 1 degree. Im hopefully getting mine ripped out this year and the chimney capped as being a smoker I decided to see where all the heating was going... Zzzzzzzzzzip it sucked the smoke up the chimney from 2 foot away.0

I had the opposite problem as my classroom boiled in the summer. I logged the temps hourly for several days then spoke to the Head - I was given a good fan so the pupils and I all felt better. (clear knock on improvement in their behaviour, concentration and learning).
The school has a 'duty of care' to employees so it is worth contacting your union if the Head won't do anything - your pupils will be grateful too.I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0
