Yeah, if the noise is (wheel) speed related rather than tied to engine speed then it's usually either the differential or bearings. If it's the diff I wouldn't worry too much, a lot of cars do it.

hmm, like a plane taking off does make sense actually.

The sound didn't get louder when i switched, radio, heating, lights, rear window heaters on. tried changing gear and dipping the clutch but the sound is still constant according to speed. The only variable that affects the noise appears to be speed.

you can actually hear the noise becoming slower and faster as the car speeds up/down.

Does anybody think this could be a problem with the gears? i need to be sure because the 3 month warranty has a matter of weeks left and if I have a good idea its the gearbox i'll take it back to be fixed.

I have read a website relating to a noisy gearbox at http://www.cotta.com/noise.html but it doesn't mean too much to me, just want to be sure it's not a deteriorating gear set and have to shell out another few hundred 3 months after the first one broke.

Thanks to everyone for their help with this.

Wheel bearings then. Either that or your mudguard is rubbing against the tyre lol.

Can't see it being the gearbox from what you have described.

As for gearbox noise, in my experience most, if not all gearboxes whine to some degree, especially on overrun (slowing in second being the most common). Absolutely nothing to worry about in most cases. My Hyundai's gearbox has whined on overrun very slightly in second gear from day one. I think most people just don't notice or get used to it.
