Car Noise!
Sorry if I have posted in the wrong place but I am at my wits end and not sure else where to post!
I have recently had some problems with my Seat ibiza x (2001) gearbox, a new one has been installed but another (different) noise has returned.
im hearing a spinning (possibly whirring) type sound but it only increases as speed does. it can't be heard below 20mph but gets sort of faster. It doesn’t seem to matter what gear your in. whatever noise it is gets faster and slows down with speed.
the noise is definately coming from the front of the car, does not seem to be the wheel bearings, (it can't be heard out of the window).
Troubleshooting via the internet sounds as if it could be a belt or the alternator, does this sound possible?
I did have a lot of trouble with the new gearbox so am thinking it may be this. I have checked the casing for oil but it's dry. Could this noise be associated with the gearbox? I want to be sure if it is before i take the car to the gearbox centre to be fixed under warrantee.
Thanks in advance,
Daniel

Hi,
Like you say it sounds like a drive belt to me . You may have a few belts on the car such as alternator drive belt, power steering belt etc. Probably don`t have a fan belt as most fans electric nowadays.
Its probably the alternator belt that needs tightening up. It really is a 5 minute job . I would take it back and ask them to tighten it up .Even if a new belt is needed this is still a small job. If you dont get it fixed eventually the alternator will not work and you will end up with a flat battery.
The problem could be other things but as this is the most likely and cheapest I would try this firstOn the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.0 -
Thank you, that has put mind at rest a bit, The car is overdue a service so I think i'll book it in and ask them to take a look.
Thanks again,

A slipping belt usually makes more of a screeching sound and this could be easily be recreated while the car is stationary and revving the engine. It could be one of the universal joints (constant velocity) located at each end of the drive shafts.
As it could be many things, you need to first establish if it only happens when the vehicle is being driven i.e. (drive train) or it is being caused by some other bearing on the eingine, like the alternator etc.
You may get more assistance from others if you stated the make and model of the car.

Thanks for your reply.
the car Is a Seat Ibiza x reg 2000 model,
annoyingly, it does only happen when the vehicle is being driven, i have tried revving the engine when the car is stationary and can't hear any sound like it.0 -
If you turn on all electrical thing fully ( rear screen, full lights etc) does the noise get worse? If so its gotta be alternator related. On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.0

I'm going to try that tonight on my way home from work, fingers crossed it's not the alternator, that would be a new gearbox and alternator in 3 months!0

Also try dipping the clutch for a few seconds and see if this makes any difference, post back results. On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.0
