Distance between hob and tall unit or wall unit

Am I right in thinking I can't put the hob next to a tall oven housing? what is the minimum distance I must leave either side of the hob before a wall unit or tall cupboard?

I think the Ikea kitchen planner advises you that there should be a gap of 50cm.

I don't believe there is a minimum distance required by law although common sense dictates that there should be a gap. In my last five kitchens (over more years than I care to remember) I always left enough space that I could plonk down whatever was my largest pan or dish. Nothing worse than a boiling hot pan finding the weak spot in the oven glove and you have to continue to hold on while desperately hunting for a clear space to drop the hot pan. In this kitchen, it is 300 mm which is also wide enough to take a narrow cupboard below to house the saucepans close to where you will want to use them.

Look up the installation details on the manufacturers website.Or ask your Corgi installer.

    Corgi Guy.
Ask to see CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering)

50mm is usually the minimum distance quoted for fitting next to a wall. I'd agree with Paddy's Mum that you should aim for 300mm minimum - on one side, at the very least - for pan handles that stick out and for putting things down.

It's interesting that many hobs recommend 50mm either side of the hob before you fit any wall units too - yet you can still buy integrated cooker hoods which are exactly the same width as the hob.

On my electric hob its 50 cm vertical allowance. However that'd be pretty low and would block your view of the hob if tall.

I was under the impression the distances may be different for electric hobs to gas hobs (the minimum vertical height from hob to cooker hood is lower for electric to gas hobs - according to my cooker hood manual)?
I'd consult the manual or ask the manufacturer.

The rule is to follow the guidelines given by the hob manufacturer and if that has none - then the extractor manufacturer ... and if that has none then the minimum is 760mm for a gas hob (Corgi regs). I'm not sure what the electrical regs say.

Electric and gas hobs do often differ - it's common for electric hobs to be 650mm. I've also come across a Zanussi cooker hood which specified 650 for an electric built-in hob, 700 for a gas hob, 685 for a free standing electric cooker and 787 for a gas cooker.

  • As a kitchen fitter i can tell you the following measurements are the regulation minimum, obviously the manufacturer may state higher limits but these are the regulation minimums.
    Hood above electric hob: 650mm
Hood above gas hob: 750mm (May be reduced to 727mm with regular
cleaning of the hood to prevent fire risk)
Wall units either side of hob at least 366mm above.
Minimum of 300mm clearance is required either side of the hob if installing next to a larder unit or flammable material.

    Hope this helps
  • Don't forget that if you are leaving a gap for a work surface and decide to place a wall socket along this gap, there is a minimum distance that the socket needs to be from the hob. This distance..... currently escapes me. (I think its 300mm from the socket edge nearest the hob....)
