I ordered mine on the 29th Aug - standard delivery - and it arrived this morning. It was really badly packed - 2 archos boxes inside one large brown box with no padding - dread to think how much they got shook around! plus a random loose plug in the box for additional battering! It seems ok though and it is a brilliant deal. Thanks to OP.0

If you archos guys download this little free program you can convert your files downloaded off the net to play on your archos without paying for the archos plug-ins which they charge extra for.
I cannot praise my archos high enough, I spend half my life flying, before I go I load it up with all sorts from sky and sky+ and catch up on the plane. The only slight downside to the Archos, (well the 604 I have) is the low max volume level and crappy built in speaker, with the noise cancelling headphones I now use it is not really an issue.Signature No Longer acceptable -

Hi
My daughter's portable DVD player that I use in the car has died a death. I was looking at a new one but have also been thinking about an ARCHOS. Does anyone know how easy it is to add DVDs onto this, how long the battery runs etc?
Do you think it's worth spending the extra?
Thanks

Have to agree on the volume thing... think that's an EU thing though. I'm sure i read a while back that volumes of media players through phones had to be hardware turned down to avoid hearing damage... My Samsung MP3 isn't very loud either !!
I'm sure first Generation ipods were originally very loud
I haven't ripped a dvd yet but i'm led to believe that it's easy to drag and drop the file from the DVD - however you do need the codec to play. (Downloadable at a price from archos)
But for TV stuff it's superb.
Battery i reckon you'll get 3 1/2 hours or so on video playback judging by my battery meter when watching back SKy. Haven't got below one bar yet though
All the best

Using the docking station to record is very easy, just like using a video recorder, I tend to hook the player up to my pc and archive films I have recorded and already watched on there, I sometimes reload the good ones for a re-run.
The input can be any AV style signal, there are also S-VHS sockets and a couple of others. I use a SCART to av converter cable which works just fine.
The battery life for watching movies is 4 - 4.5 hours, I have a spare battery that I charge and use the pair of them for long flights. Copy batteries are available on well known online auction sites lol or you can pay a fortune and get an original one from Archos.
Personally I think it is fantastic and is the first thing in the bag when I travel, I take the docking station as well as it allows me to play back using any screen with an AV or SCART input, useful for when I am in hotels. There is a USB charge lead included but I find the docking station much quicker to charge it up. I bought mine in the US and got it for the same price in dollars as it was in pounds which made it half price at the time.
I have the 30GB 604 and have had it a while, it is the non touch screen version with no wi-fi, I use my lapotop for internet so have little need for it on my Archos at present. The screen quality is very very good and in the close confines of airplanes is more than big enough to watch easily.
As to whether it is worth the extra is your call, however to be able to carry lots of movies, TV programes photos and music in one small unit for my purposes is fantastic and worth every penny.Hi

Does any one know how many films a 40Gb Archos will hold?
ThanksLife is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body,
but rather to skid in sideways, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming ..... wow what a Ride!0 -
I would guestimate an average film is 700Mb - 1.2 GB ish but there are variables involved, length of the film and the quality of the recording settings being the main two, increase either and the file size increases.Does any one know how many films a 40Gb Archos will hold?
