  • So if it's not for placement or it's not enough for placement ( in the terms of travel allowence), anyone know in the eyes on the H/B people ( at this time of night and of bottle of wine worse off) anyone know what it's for? I vaugely remember a letter saying something about my basic amonut being a contribution towards my tuition fees, does this mean that is what it will be taken into account for?

The reason for my asking is I am in private rent and my rent it very high, so in the terms of H/B will my bursery be taken into account?

I'm not sure this is what you're asking... but I got offered a £1000 grant from my Uni for being seen to have great potential (heh, like a bribe to go study there, I think), to put towards course materials; anything from books to paint (Art student). But my parents make just too much money for me to be allowed to accept it... It's frustating, as my parents wont be giving me a grand for materials..

    *sigh* As is life.

  • It's an absolute disgrace how uni's treat those with cars. My partner has been on only 1 local placement out of 8 on her RMN course. Most placements have been at least a 50 mile round trip. Those with kids, without a car etc, get the nearest placement possible, regardless.
It's a sham, no official documentation on mileage. One of OH's colleague's claimed an extra 20 mile per day despite not doing them. There is plenty of technology to prevent this. Just because someone has a car doesn't make it fair to send them further.

Cars don't cost per mile. They can cost £50 per month extra in repairs too, not something that the people behind desks/phones consider.

Most organisations that pay mileage have lists of the distances between places and know what is and isn't allowed and any organisation that pays for travel pays mileage rather than running costs. It may seem unfair to car drivers to have to go the furthest distances but what's the alternative? 30 miles by public transport could take hours and people with children will have arrangements wrecked if they miss a bus. Nobody forces someone to run a car and, if it's not advantageous ,you could always stop doing so.
  • Ah, but here's the difference. If you have a car, you get sent miles and miles away for EVERY single placement. If you don't have a car, and have kids etc, you get sent round the corner.
What's the alternative? You ensure that all candidates have the opportunity for the exact same expenses - regardless of time it takes to get there. Students with kids should not get an easier deal than any others. Likewise students with cars should not be sent further away.

i think the universities have to make concessions for people with children. Also some people with certain disabilities can't drive and if they were given a placement with no public transport and then failed after not being able to attend then the university may be seen as discriminating against the disabled.

Part of the social work bursary you get is intended for your travel expenses during your practice placements. Sadly they seem to think that £500 roughly is more than adequate for the cost of commuting to and from placement. Think I'd spent that much on running my car before I was even half way through placement!!!

Sadly that's £500 more than I get to help me get to placements... Not all medical students were born with a rich "mummy and daddy"  :(
