Bursaries

Bestpud posted a list of things that were taken into account when it came to means tested benefits. On the list it says ....
Bursaries (available to full-time students who started their course in September 2006 or later) that are not for course related costs, or childcare
Can I ask a silly question;) Which bursaries are for course related costs? I mena I thought they all were. I get a bursery as I'm doing social work and I know I get a bursery from uni also.
If they aren't for course related costs, then what else would they be given for. ( Does that make sense?).

Part of the social work bursary you get is intended for your travel expenses during your practice placements. Sadly they seem to think that £500 roughly is more than adequate for the cost of commuting to and from placement. Think I'd spent that much on running my car before I was even half way through placement!!!0

Mileage rates when you work in the public sector are normally 40p per mile so £500 equates to 1250 miles which would normally cover most people's travel. It's not supposed to cover the cost of running a car!0 -

My level two placement is a 60 mile round trip. Over 70 days this equates to 4200 miles. Assuming I don't have to travel any additional miles or pay for parking (chances are I will have to) then £500 is nothing.
There aren't any closer placements according to my uni. It's a good job I need to lose weight because it doesn't look like i'll be eating next month.0 -

Wow, that's a long way to go for a placement; our local universities manage to get them much nearer.0 -
My uni has city and rural based placements, city placements are given to non drivers and rural to the drivers. Muggins that I am owned up to having a driving licence, not knowing how far "rural" they had in mind.0

can't you claim a travel expenses grant or is that just a saas thing?0

ah well that smells. How about the universitys discretionary fund? Ours has a box to tick for course related expenses and these ones tend to get paid out better than requests for living costs.0

Not likely, there's an 100 day placement yet, that'll be fun.0
