so sorry you are in this position with your baby.
i had to put my cat to sleep in June - she had come out of remission from stomach cancer. i spoke to my vet and he came out to my home to do the task. i asked if i could keep my cat for a few hours afterwards, so my other cat (her littermate) could register what had happened. after she had died, my surviving cat washed her body all over for about an hour, and sat by her. then the practice nurse came and collected my cat's body some time later.
i also arranged to attend the crematorium on the day she was cremated. it hadn't even crossed my mind that this was possible, and i am so glad i did. i got to say goodbye to my little girl one last time in a quiet, peaceful room. they then took her away and i spent 3 hours in the gardens of rememberance whilst they cremated her, and packed her ashes for me in a lidded pot that i took with me. (they do have pots that you can choose from, but I had one that i bought in Thailand which seemed ideal for her).
it is expensive to have them PTS at home...luckily my vet waived the fee as he had been caring for her for 18months throughout her lymphoma treatment, and he had grown very fond of her.0
