Is this possible?

Options
We have a Yorkie, she is 10 and weve just found out that that she has tumors on her lung and advanced heart disease.
We went to the vet's last night as he wanted to see how well she was responding to the last set of drugs and as she isnt he has added a steroid.
He did say though that next week we may have to "start making some descisions".

My question is, If the worst comes to the worst and I have to have her put to sleep, would the vet come to my home?
Is this somthing they ould consider? I know it's daft but she hates going the vet's and I really dont want that room to be the last thing she see's before she go's asleep.

Any advice appreciated.

  • Sorry to hear about your dog. Most vets will offer a home service but it will be quite expensive compared to taking her to the surgery. It would also have to be pre-planned, if she was deteriorated you couldn't wait until the vet was able to come she would have to go to the surgery.

I had my cat put to sleep last year, I didn't know it was going to happen so didn't have the opportunity to ask for a home visit. I held her in my arms while she had the injection, it was very peaceful and I'm glad I stayed with her til the very end so if you feel able then I'd advise staying with her while she has the injection - wish there was a hug icon.

I'm sorry sorry about your little dog.

I didnt have the opportunity to arrange anything as both of my dogs who were put to sleep went down hill suddenly. I held them both until the very end.

If you do have to have her put to sleep at the vets then as long as you hold her close and keep looking in her eyes then you will be the last thing she sees instead of the vets room.

I'm crying just thinking about this :( I'm so so sorry you have to go through this the only comfort that you will have is that she had a loving home with you and that you did what was best for her.

It is so heartbreaking but if you can stay strong enough to hold her until the end (or if you cant bear it then someone else she trusts) it should make it a little easier for her to be there.

Big hugs & loads of love for you & your poor dog.
  • It is possible and worth talking to your vet about, my aunt had her last dog pts at home because she didnt like travelling in the car or going to the vets.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news. They definitely will come to your home, my sister had to have her dog PTS two weeks ago and the vet came out. I suspect in your case this might be possible.
Horrible though this sounds, however, you will need to think about where you will lay her to rest and if it is in the garden, have the area prepared in advance.

    Hi,
Thanks to you all for your kind words of comfort.
It is such a sad time, for us and our kids. We really didnt think it would be so sudden as we were told about her conditions 2 weeks ago and the vet at the time (not our usual) said we were looking at 6months. So now to be told next week we are devastated.
It's so awful to look at her as on the whole she seems ok, still eating well etc she is just a bit breathless and tired.
She sleeps in our room at night and I have'nt slept for nights, just listening to her breathing and checking up on her.
I have a vets appt next Wed so will discuss my worries with him then.
    Thanks again
    xx

Just to update you all, our little dog died early hours this a.m. so we didnt have to make the decision in the end.
    She passed in our arms.
    Were all so sad.
  • Really sorry to hear that, it doesn't take away any of thr pain right now but at least she went surrounded by the people who she loved.

    [FONT=Verdana, sans-serif]I was chosen today
    I'm learning to fly
    the world took me away,
    but please don't you cry

    And I chose you today
    to try and be strong
    so please don't you cry
and don't say that I'm gone

    When you're feeling alone
    just remember our love,
    I'm up near the stars
    looking down from above.

    Remember our love
    In a moment you'll see
that I'm still here beside you
    when you're thinking of me.

You have my deepest sympathy and I can fully understand how you're feeling. You were spared having to make that dreadful decision and you're little girl died at home and in the arms of someone who loved her. Remember all the happy times you shared together and the love you gave each other.
    Take good care.
