Do we have any Power?

Excuse the pun and apologies if this topic has been discussed before

But do we have any power as a collective Jo and Joanne Blogs on the ground
To petition against the rising prices of Gas and Electric?
I have considered writing to my local MP, but am aware that I am one very small fish in a big sea
On a more rebellious day, I have had a dream of the nation switching off Gas and Electricity supplies for an hour to make a stand :j

I myself am concerned about my ability to pay my Fuel bills and the impact it will have on my "playing" budget
But also for my relatives, particularly older ones who are living on a very limited income

I am sure my sentiments are the same as many, I am sick and tired of this country robbing us left right and centre, giving as far as I can see very little back
And of the government doing ****** all to protect us average folk on the ground

Is there anything which can be done en masse? of course in a peaceful, orderly manner!!!!!

And just what do you think the Government can do about fuel prices ?

Pass a Law so that the energy companies cannot sell their products above a certain price ?

You say you are sick of "this country" robbing you - then you suggest that the Government keeps fuel prices down - how ? give everyone a £500 a year fuel bonus - paid for by 10p on Income Tax I presume ?
What have you done to help yourself ?

Sorry - but join the real world, you seem to be elsewhere, worrying about your "playing budget".

Since when Moonrakerz did the right to freedom of speech become an entrance for you to have a personal attack..."what have you done to help yourself" that is between me and mine and frankly, no business of yours whatsoever...and the same goes for me and my "playing budget"...who the hell do you think you are? creator of the almighty universe
Stick to the point at hand, instead of butting your nose in business which is not yours to butt into:T

You seem to be telling me that I have no right to express my opinion , especially if it doesn't agree with yours ! I obviously hit a nerve when I mentioned your "playing budget" - if people think that playing GTA, or whatever, comes before paying for heat, light or food then it doesn't need the "creator of the almighty universe " to point out that their priorities are perhaps a little skewed !
When you mentioned your "playing budget" - you put it in the public domain for people to comment on - no one else. If you can't stand the heat in the kitchen ......................

My post was very much to the point in hand - just what do you think your ill-considered ideas in your OP will actually do ? If you don't wan't people "butting your nose in business which is not yours to butt into" why put the post there in the first place ?

I say again - join the real world !

Why do you consider that "this country is robbing us"?

Do you not feel that it is a global problem?

All households with someone over 60 get £250 including millionaires!

Should everyone get more? Where shall the money come from?

It is easy to define the problem - energy is expensive - solutions are more difficult!

I seem to be telling you that you have no right to put your nose in some body else's affairs, make value judgements based on assumptions
    Not, not have an opinion
I don't remember making any comment about putting any aspect of personal budgets before one or the other..and as for not being able to take the heat in the kitchen
In my world, I do not feel I have the right nor arrogance to pass such comments whether based on what I know or what I am assuming
    Once again, butt out:j

I have to admit that when prices were to me acceptable I used what I wanted to use without worrying too much. Since the prices started to go up and I was paying more than £50 per month on gas and electric I started to cut down. I have capped my fuel which means I am ok for now but of course when that runs out I`ll have a big hike unless prices come down. Take my water, I have had it on for 2 hours twice a day for years and years. Probably justified when I had 3 under 6 but not since they have been old enough to have showers. Since BG increased the price I reduced it to half an hour twice a day. Water still hot enough for 4 showers a day, washing up and water still not run cold.

I always have my room thermostat on almost 25 degrees as I hate to feel the cold and love to be cosey and warm. I won`t be doing that this winter. It will be more likely 20 degrees. I don`t think I`ll be able to go as low as 18 but financially I don`t need to at this moment in time. There are ways that we can economise and of course good for the environment too.

Yes it will be harder for the elderly but they will get their winter fuel allowance. No it won`t pay all of the winter fuel bill but it does help. I don`t think this should be restricted to the elderly as I do have a daughter with a heart condition and she does feel the cold. But I know they have to stop somewhere as like Cardew pointed out, we all end up paying for it in taxes.

The poster above has the right idea - the short of it is, there's not a lot we (as consumers) can do about rising prices.

EVERYTHING is going up, not just fuel prices. What are the government to do, they're already trying to plow money into the failing financial and housing market, where is the money for fuel costs going to come from? Tax us less and have even worse hospital and schools?

I think price increases show some people just exactly what golden days we have had and that, as space rider says, when prices were cheaper people didn't care if they left lights on all day, TVs on in rooms that no-one is in.

The country needs to be more energy efficient, and if everyone gets on board, then the prices may fall and demand may be lessened, but at the moment people still waste a hell of a lot of energy that they don't need to. Energy saving bulbs, for instance, cost hardly anything, and do contribute to energy costs, yet a lot of people still don't fork out for them.

As that well-known supermarket says, "every little helps"

I would like to see the government and local authority bought to task over wasted energy.
A full scale investigation , interviews not just with the top boys, but those at ground level, the caretakers, the clerks who leave their comps on all night, the shopkeepers leaving lights on overnight.
Take some of the rubbish off TV and lets have a series of programmes naming and shaming.
Lets have an investigation into the sheer incompetance of Ofgem and the cartel of energy companies.
