Getting Out Of Aol Contract Early?

about a year ago I was paying AOL 17.99 for 1mb and agreed to a deal to pay 9.99 for 8mb with AOL talk, I am sure I was told it was a 12 month contract.
2 days ago i asked for my MAC code, nothing was said apart from I would get it in five days. Today I was worried that the 12 months might not be up so called CS to check and they told me I am still on an 18 month contract!!!
I said I was told 12 months and she said no you would have had the terms& conditions sent to you in an email , i NEVER EVER got an email, i remember phoning them at the time to check that i was on Aol talk as I did not get any emails at all.
In the end she said I would only have to pay a £12 charge to get the equipment off my line, and i would be billed for this when I got my MAC. I have never heard of this before.
Does this sound right??? I am not convinced, I am wondering if I will get an email saying i cant have my MAC unless I pay the six months worth?
What should I do now?

Doesn't sound right, tell them to send you confirmation by email before you agree to pay, £12 to end a contract early seems a little low.0

i just called them again and they said that it will be £12, i think it is because when i upgraded they did not send me a 'free' router.
they said they cant generate an email but i will get one after i get my MAC0 -
I asked AOL for my MAC on Monday, still not received it, i just KNOW i am going to have a hard time now0

Go back to them and tell them if you do not get your MAC within the 5 days stipulated by OFCOM you will raise a formal complaint with OFCOM about AOL refusing to provide your MAC0

Regardless of whether you owe money in your contract or not, they must still provide you with a MAC. They can't use that as an excuse. That is a seperate issue on it's own and they need to deal with that seperately with you. They have to supply you a MAC when you ask for it even if you are in a contract.0

well, i phoned them yet again and they are saying that i should definitely get it by monday..whats the betting that I dont?!
If i dont have it monday then i'm going to threaten them with ofcom0 -
