Brake Discs

Hi all

I hope someone can help with a query.

Just had an advisory on the MOT that the car has only just met the front brake imbalance requirements, and may need adjustment or repair.

I'm guessing this means the discs may need to be changed, so my question is this - how much can I expect to pay?

The car is an 8-year-old Renault Laguna. I have always taken it to Renault for repairs but I'd consider going to an independent if the price was too high at Renault.

Thanks if anyone can help

I can't help specifically for Renaults, but I had a lot of work done on my brakes recently because the front caliper seized.

Two calipers, two front brake discs, brake fluid and flexihose + labour & VAT came to £560. Sadly I was faced with a decision between paying for brakes and scrapping the car but only had half an hour to make the decision in so plumped for the repair. :D

The two front discs + labour came to £136. This is a 16 year old Ford Sierra mind, I'm not sure whether a Laguna would be more or less.

Your best bet is to ring round some garages and get some quotes. :)

You might - just might - want to ask http://www.kwik-fit.com/free-brake-check.asp to quote, due to their lifetime 'free' replacement, of pads.

Then see what an independent garage will ask.
& do also ask your main dealer, as quite often they will also have a fixed price, which turns out to be quite reasonable, for older models, surprisingly enough.

There's no need to take the car for them to inspect, just make sure you have FULL model details & make a few calls.

Do ask for discs AND pads &, of course, VAT!!

    Expect £120ish. at a guess.

Oh no he won't want to go to kwik tit...

Brakes imbalanced......... speak to the MOT tester. He'll have an idea - could just mean pads.

    Lets not get dramatic folks..:o

  • Was it mot'd at a renault dealers? If it were, take it to an independent garage, theres no need to use a main dealers at this age of car. Set of discs and pads should be around £150 fitted. If it's an advisory, the car still passed the mot, it can be an easy earner for some garages, they tell you you need all that done and it maybe not true, it could just mean you need new pads even. As I said at the start, you really should be using an independent garage at this age, and please dont go to Kwik fit ;)

It isn't the brake discs that are at fault, it's the calipers. One is starting to show signs of seizing up. Chances are that taking the pads out and greasing the sliders as well as pushing in and pumping out the piston a few times will sort it.

You were robbed. £80 at most including discs and labour, £100 with a new set of pads.

Kwik Fit's free pads are only free if you get any additional work done by them or something. Basically this means your shock absorbers and discs will be knackered when you come to need the free pads.

Pads aren't too difficult to replace yourself with the correct tools and cost next to nothing.

You cannot say that it is the calipers. OP needs to get the brakes looked at, properly, preferably by a good independent.

Speculation isn't good. Could be a number of reasons why they were unbalanced on the test. It didn't fail the MOT - an advisory. So lets not panic.
