Morrison's charging VAT
Comments
-
Strictly speaking VAT is charged on virtually all goods. It's just that some (staple foodstuffs for instance) are charged at 0%.
Yes, it is barmy, but people always seem to believe tax and logic should somehow belong in the same sentence - which is a complete nonsense of course!0 -
i beleive all stores have to display the total price (inc VAT) of goods- though some places that deal mainly with the trade may be net..
depending on shop systems, the receipt could be giving you breakdown of gross prices with toal vat paid, net plus vat, or exclusive (no vat) prices.Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -

Yep I do this routinely in Morrisons. You also have ot watch out for how they stack the shelves too, like the 4 beers for £5 selection no longer being any beer in the section because they've wiggled some slightly more expensive beers in there which don't count on the offer.0 -
I think that perhaps you need to learn what VAT is actually applied against before starting a thread such as this.
I don't think it is a simple as that. I used to be a VAT Accountant as still work very close with the current VAT Accountant where I work. Sometimes even we have to get the VAT Manual out, as it is not that clear cut. The rules change, there are loopholes in the rules (like the Jaffa cake debate!) and even the experts often disagree.
Take the school photographer. Comes into the school takes some pictures and sells them to the parents to make money for the school. The VAT man wanted to start to collect VAT (less money for the school). Some local authories paid it, others stood their ground and said it was not VATable due to some loopholes in the law. A couple of years later the local authorities won and the photo's were not taxable. :j
Milkshakes in McDonalds are another odd case in point. Drink in the restaurant and it is vatable, take it away and it isn't. That is why in the earlier days they always asked if you were eating in or out and charged you more to eat in.I want to be credit card and loan free by Christmas 20100 -

But pretty much with most groceries from a supermarket it's straight forward.
I remember (all those years ago) when I was 16 and worked in a local supermarket and had to mark up products as to whether they were VAT applicable or not. Perhaps this is why I find it fairly easy to distinguish? I don't know, but the OP stating that VAT is only charged on "hot food" has been ill informed and perhaps they need to look a little deeper into the tax rules as to how theiy spend their money before complaining about Morrison's procedures?"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
A couple of Months ago, when the papers were full of articles about cutting down on plastic bags and Government action on the same, I bought one of those "bags for life"from morrisons. I noticed that V.A.T. was charged on that also!
I like that morrisons shows where V.A.T. is applicable, it helps to remind me how the Government likes to rip us off in the least expected of places0 -
Yes I notice that Morrison have been overcharging me recently. Maybe it was happening all the time but i never noticed, but now I do.
The shelf says one price and when I cash at the till my receipt says another. Then I would go and check on the shelf again to make sure of the price and then go to customer service.
The funny thing is though, they do not argue with me nor do they go and check the price on the shelf. Instead they just check my receipt and refund me the difference. Please check your receipts after shopping at Morrisons. You are 48% tight
