Originally VAT was applied to luxury goods, i.e. not staples, and it was quite clear cut.

Now, of course, there is such a plethora of available foodstuffs and other items that the rules are open to ridicule, hence the business about whether something is a cake or a biscuit, even if both are covered in chocolate.

now i know you pay VAT on hot food but when i checked the till reciept at home i found that my bill was £52.90 subtotal, +VAT @6.94 bringing my shopping to £59.84. when did this start, i had no hot food as i said, nothing apart from basic grocery shopping.

I think that perhaps you need to learn what VAT is actually applied against before starting a thread such as this.

Exactly what did you think you'd bought that was VAT exempt? Household items, biscuits, chocolate, squash, fruit juice dog food etc all have VAT applied. Morrisons are not going to charge VAT on non VAT items. They know thier business.

I guess that Morrison's have changed the way they lay out their receipts, breaking down the VAT instead of giving one total. That's what shocked the OP. Perhaps, with the VAT staring her in the face, she thought that prices had significantly gone up.

Presumably she knows now that she is paying the same as usual, just that a proportion of it goes in tax, as it has since the seventies(?). No doubt someone knows when it was introduced in the UK.

Yup, it's all become a folly.

VAT is charged on items like pure fruit juice, toilet roll and toothpaste, but not on cream cakes and microwave cheeseburgers!

Only the British government could create a system as barmy as that.

I went to Morrisons today & amongst my shopping got some Mr kipling Vienese Whirls shelf price of something like 69p half price offer on currently. Have got home to see my receipt this evening that they have charged me full price. Its so annoying when this happens I guess its my own fault for not running through my receipt whilst in store coz now I have to go back to complain. I should have learnt my lesson really as its not the first time Morrisons have done this!!
