Most catalogues will report to a credit reference agency, if you keep your payments up to date, you will get a nice row of 0. If you apply for a bank account, credit card it will give you plus points on your application. There are loads of catalogues, I know that the JD Williams group report to CRA's they are branded under: Simply Be, Fashion World, Marisota. Then you have Grattan and freeman's who are the same company, Littlewood's. Oh yes, there is Next as well;)
Whatever is on your credit report now should also be up to date too!

so i see something i like in the catalogue, ring them up and buy it and pay for it on my debit card straight away? or do i do a buy now pay later thing?0

You have to open a catalogue credit account[ Additions is called Flexible Account] this will allow you to pay monthly, i have additions direct and they do 3 months interest free which for me is fine. if i order a shirt for £90 that makes my payments 3 x £30 , there prices are good the only downside is the £3-50 postage but i look around for discount codes on here and that gets me my stuff cheaper so the postage is not a problem coz ive saved cash with the discount code.0

Firstly, do you actaully have any credit history ? C/cards ? Finance ? Mobile phone contract etc ?
If you have NO credit history you WILL be considered a high risk and may have difficulty in obtaining credit. There are credit card accounts specifically designed for people with NO/BAD credit.
Ways to improve your credit score:-
Ensure you are on the electoral role - it's imperative.
Have a bank account.
Manage your bank account well - your own bank is your first place to start when looking for credit as they already have a relationship with you. Have you tried them ?
Be employed.
Have other credit accounts - mobile phone contracts / finance etc
As for a catalogue, NO you don't pay for goods via your debit card, you set up a credit account and will be allocated a set limit. You then make purchases and pay your bill monthly to demonstrate that you are capable of paying and can pay by the due date. BEWARE catalogue accounts charge extremely high rates of interest, approx 40%.0 -
iv just turned 18 and have been declined for a barclays overdraft and inital cc meant for people with bad ratings. so dont really know what else to do, is there a possibility of being turned down by catalogue companies? i spoke to my bank; hsbc and they said come back and talk to us in a few months0

I had a poor cvredit rating and was turned down for Freemans and Empire. Found premierman and jacamo and they gave me small credit limits (£125) so that I could start ordering. These both report to the CRAs and have a good range of items. There is a full selection at http://www.homeshoppingdirect.com/home.jsp. They ahve a whole range of catalogues to choose from. When you have chosen a catalogue, choose the "Register" option, then choose option 3 if you want to go ahead and apply for a credit account online; they will tell you straight away if you are successful and also what your credit limit is. The good thing about this site is that you can cross-shop the different catalogues with the same account number (for most of them).
Hope that helps0 -

It really is a catch 22 situation when starting out.
Yes the catalogue company can and possibly will turn you down. The more you apply and get turned down the worse your credit history becomes so don't just apply for anything and everything just yet.
So you have accounts wih Barclays and HSBC and neither will assist ? Are these new accounts ? Are you employed ?0 -
cheers il give it a go and see how i get on.0

i have one with hsbc, halifax, havent spoke to halifax yet, but hsbc said go back and speak to them again in a few months. i went to barclays to open a new account because they had better rates, and they turned me down for the account with overdraft and they turned me down for the baclycard inital.0
