I don't know if this is any help as you are moving only 3 miles. However, when I moved out of a city to a small town nearby, I found the quotes from removers near my new house were cheaper than quotes from near my old home. Presumably because the city overheads for a remover were more expensive than those in my new area.

Also, the distance doesn't really make a great deal of difference to the price as the main cost is in the loading and unloading labour.

Don't forget to show them all the stuff in your garage/shed and any garden furniture, pots, etc. It is better to get these in the quote than to have the movers saying it will mean an extra load, at extra cost, on the day.

Even if you pack yourself, get their advice. Sometimes they can move, say, a chest of drawers, with the contents in place rather than you packing it up separately in boxes.

Thanks for everyones advice. We hav e3 quotes ranging from £720 at the top end to £411 at the lowest. we are going with the lowest as we used them a few years ago and they come recommended.

Glad to know this seems like a fair price. We are doing all the packing beforehand. £350 + VAT.

    Thanks again.

There's a website (sorry but i don't remember the URL and lost a few years of bookmarks recently!) that you can put in your details which are then submitted to local removal companies. They then get back to you individually either with a quote or to arrange to come out to quote. It's a bit like confused.com but for removal companies. Maybe someone else knows the address.

For us, we had literally a week from when we knew the move date to when we were moving so we had very little choice of removal companies and ended up with a luton van and 2 men (£150) just for the big stuff like bed, sofa, washing machine, tv etc and moved everything else ourselves. We wished after that we had got them to take more stuff as it was very stressful! As i can't lift a box from the floor (can't straighten knees) i was a bit limited in what i could do and became the move coordinator. Really couldn't have done as much as we did ourselves without family support!

We moved from a 1-bed rented flat bursting at the seams with our furniture and belongings. It's surprising how much you can fit into a 1 bed flat! We weren't moving far (couple of miles) so did alot of the move ourselves in multiple car journeys (using upto 3 cars at one point ) as we rented the flat for a few days past completion on the house. We completed on the friday, we visited the house in the evening (OHs work wouldn't even give her the day off !!). We moved what we could via cars on saturday/sunday and had men and van on the monday to complete the move (the monday being 2 years ago from today! can't believe 2 years gone already!).

Take it from someone who knows...don't even begin packing until exchange of contracts! With the house we were originally buying the vendor pulled out the day before exchange...we'd already packed most of our stuff so then we were months with a flat full of packed boxes until we finally got to move to where we are now.

If your doing the packing yourself get some sturdy boxes and don't overpack them. Removal companies will often give boxes to you but you usually have to pay for them or it will be factored into the price - so if you can get your own for free elsewhere it may bring the cost down a little. We got alot of triple ply corrugated cardboard boxes from a clothes shop where OH's mum works - far stronger than the normal flimsy moving boxes.

Good luck with the move and hope you enjoy your new home!
