Removal Prices?

Options
Moving house in a few weeks and need to get a removal company in as I willl be recuperating from surgery and cannot dio the move myself.

We are moving from a 3 bed semi with a garage and one 2 year old child. Only moving 3 miles down the road. Moving out/in in one day.

Any ideas of a ball park figure for removal costs?

I know of one couple, moved in late july, same size house , about the same distance
    and lt Cost £700.
But I reckon it all depends on your area... Chelsea double it ( treble) :D

Shop around get a few quotes, with the housing market, prices should be lower!

    Hi truescot,

I found myself having an operation two weeks before moving - on my arm (doh!!!!) which made the situation quite fraught, so I sympathise totally.

When I was looking to move I called the British Association of Removers (see http://www.bar.co.uk/) who gave me a list of members in my area.

The price depended on the type of services offered. At the top end they will come in, pack everything for you and move it. In the middle, you can pick one who will loan you packing materials, but you do the work, and then they come and move it for you. At the bottom end was companies who purely did the move. We chose the middle option.

Of the companies we called, a couple couldn't make the date, one didn't turn up and quote and there was a £200 variation between the highest and lowest quote. We went with the second lowest company, who also came across as the most helpful and flexible (which was borne out on the day). That was £550, but two years ago (in Hertfordshire for a local move).

At a lower cost there are always "man with a van" type options, but we had too much stuff to move and needed a bigger removals truck, and all the people with those locally are members of BAR. The man with a van quote that we got was £350.

I also found the "I am moving" website quite handy in terms of planning what needed doing when.

I know, not the same, but we moved 120 miles nearly 3 months ago from Leicestershire to Lancashire and we paid £750. It was 2 men, all packing one day and they loaded the van the same day as I was going up anyway, and delivery and offloading the next day. Guys were really helpful!!!! And we moved to 1st floor flat, so they had to bring everything to first floor, including the washing machine (They weigh a tone!!!!)

On what vivatifosi says about different services.
My friends had the , pack on Thursday, move on Friday !
Was told that this was now being pushed as the best option, Insurance was quoted, as If they didn't pack were not liable.
    Can see their reason.

But I went round to lend a hand, but was unable to dismantle anything , packers were working, could not clean kitchen / hoover rooms etc. New people arrived early ( told them to wait .... money had not gone thru , so did not feel bad) but was still running around like mad, an hour after, the house was not legally my friends!

So much easier to pack over previous weeks, and just move 'box's' on the day

Couldn't agree more wallbash. I got my boxes two weeks in advance (and just before I had op) which gave me time to pack and less stressing. If you are going to pack that far in advance though, its useful to have a dumping room, or you end up constantly tripping over boxes for a couple of weeks.

paid about £150 for a man and a van to move contents of my 4-bed detached in Middlesex to Surrey.

That did involve us doing all the packing and also a lot of heavy lifting because it was only ONE man.

I would pack everything into boxes and get two men and a van. Given the short distance you should be able to get a cheap van (you don't need a lorry to move 3 miles).
