Is that the bob Martin crystals you use? I've tried that - it does look much nicer than normal litter, totally agree :)

Not sure whether you were asking me or the OP but the one I use is called Tigerino and is a sillicate based litter. Couldn't remember the proper name of it when I posted earlier ;)

Can he not go outside, i've had cats for most of my life and none have ever used a litter tray. ......

    I was wondering this too?

I thought litter trays were just for kittens until they are old enough to go outside....unless you have a valuable pampered pedigree that never goes out

Why not shut him out at night until he gets used to toileting in the garden?

    My cats rarely come indoors.

My parents had him neutured as a kitten!
I think I'm stuck with him and his habits!
    Blinking males :D:D:D

If he's been neutured then he's not a 'tom cat' as such and his pee should not smell so much. I always thought the term tom cat applied to un-neutured male cats

With regards to litter trays and cats that go outside, i have 5 cats that all go outside during the day, but i get them in at night, so they still need litter trays. And when the weather is bad they prefer to use the trays. Would you like to go outside to the toilet when it's peeing it down? lol :rotfl:

I live in a one bedroon flat but have 7 litter trays scattered around :o

Maybe you should take him to the vet and have him checked if he has been neutured properly because it shouldnt smell that much. My other cats are all 'done' and when they have an occasional accident it hardly smells at all compaired to the tom cat.
    Errrr...come back later ;)

Wesker - I agree our cat is a Tom too - we have 3 females as well - and the Tom's wee stinks to high heaven.

Just a thought, and I can't remember whether you said this fella has a separate tray or not, but maybe he is marking the territory around his tray to deter the girls using it?

He does go out during the day and uses the garden when necessary.
I am however a complete softie and can't settle unless all cats are in at night.
There are usually cats fighting around here at night too which is another reason why Ikeep them in.
Anyway, he managed to use the tray last night :j:j:j:j

i think mixing litter and torn up newspaper is worth a try...if you use just newspaper then it won't get rid of the smells and won't be as absorbant etc. is the litter tray against a wall or in a corner? or is there room at each side for 'overhang'?

i truly sympathise with your problem. what a mare :(
  • Try using Biolcatolet which is a litter made from recycled newspaper, that may help. Mine use that litter no problems, you have to change the full litter tray every day though as they are very fussy, one wee and it wont be used again ;)
