Network Card fault - Broadband provider

Options
Hi

I am not sure if this is the correct area to post this, so please feel free to move it to another thread section.

I brought a computer from PC World last year, I am on broadband (Cable), most of you can more than likely guess which provider, but I am refraining from stating there name.
They were doing work on my local sever and the same day after they finshed my network card broke down, I never thought anything of it at first, I took the computer back and was given a refund as it was less than 2 months old.

Now, I went to another computer store and brouht a brand new package, different make of PC, now I have had it 4 months, no problems at all, apart from yesterday they were carrying out work AGAIN on my local internet server and now the same problem has happend again, the network card has gone default and showing the incorrect IP address, the cable company (un named) have confirmed they carried out day time work to the local network.

I have plugged in my laptop, internet connecting no problem but my home PC has now got a damaged network card, the place I brought it has said they will need to investigate to see if the card was damaged by the cable company, if so my cover will instantly be void.

Has anyone had the same problem?

Any advice as to fix this issue other than replace the network card.

NOTE:

If you know which company I am referring to PLEASE do not post it here, if you wish to confirm PM me

Thanks

I'm thinking that the (cable) provider has maybe caused damage by some means, example, incorrectly connecting wires/updating server causing damage, it can't happen two times and be the PC fault, I believe that its due to the provider.

Any ideals how to fix this problem and how I could prove who is at falut would be great

What makes you think the card is broken?

There is only one cable provider in the UK.

Because I rang faults, they went through a number of tests with me on the phone, my network card has a incorrect auto config address on it and was told you can't change it?????!!!!

Anyway, this is the second time it has happend within 10 months, two different computers and at two different times, I can only think it is the internet provider:confused:

A 169 address? Have you powered off your modem?

Highly unlikely to be the ISP, or a faulty card.

    Yes, 169 address!

Faults told me I would need a new network card
I don't know much about computers and network cards is one thing about them I don't understand.

I powered the modem off, reboot'd the PC a number of times and even disconnected the cable for the internet two times like faults told me to try, still stuck on 169 auto config address, tried getting a new one but using windows repair but has failed everytime:confused:

This is the second time like I say this has happend with two different PC's

    Not true.

Smallworld / Isle of Wight Cable aren't a big company, but they definitely exist.

re: the OP, there's nothing they could do to break your network card. They'd have to do something at their end which would make your cable modem break your network card, and short of something like a lightning strike, I can't imagine how that'd be possible.

A 169 address is assigned when the cable modem can't DHCP an ip address to your computer. There's a problem with the cable modem by the sounds of it.

    Pc off, cable modem unplugged.

Turn on the PC. Make sure the network card's set to automatically get settings. "obtain an IP address automatically" in TCP/IP settings.

    Turn on the modem.

Give it a few minutes and it should assign you a proper IP address.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

How do you get your internet connection, is it via a modem or stb ??
    ITV Winners Club #87
  • Try this:

Unplug your modem and turn off your computer. Unscrew the thick cable that goes into the back of your modem and move that away from everything. Put the power lead back into the modem and then turn on your computer.

When it's booted, check your IP address and if it's 169... then it's your computer, if it's 192... then that's what you're getting from the modem so time to reconnect it, power down, power up and if you get 169.. again it's VM at fault.

WRONG. If the modem is faulty and not communicating with the LAN port, you'll get a 169 address.

I've seen this before when a novice attempts to spoof their IP address to get round a ban

A common misconception is that "IP spoofing" can be used to hide your IP address while surfing the Internet, chatting on-line, sending e-mail, and so forth. This is generally not true. Forging the source IP address causes the responses to be misdirected, meaning you cannot create a normal network connection.

someone in your household not been playing with the PC ??

It is verging on the ridiculous to not mention your cable company. :rotfl: ;)
