    If the OP isn't watching live television, they don't need a licence.

    The licence is for watching live television, not for owning a television.

    The OP says he isn't bothered about live TV, and I didn't say what he wanted to do was illegal, I said other people's ideas here are. He is still trying to watch for free what on a moral level he should be paying for. Even if he is only downloading off iPlayer he is still watching something that (nearly) everyone else pays for and wouldn't be produced in the first place if people weren't paying the fee. Also remember you can't listen to the radio either if you aren't paying for the radio fee at least.

    I agree that watching live television without a licence is illegal. And thousands of people get prosecuted for it every year, so getting caught doing so isn't unlikely.

    Even the BBC say that if you're not watching live TV, you don't need a licence, as do the TV licencing authority.

    A licence is to watch live TV; if you're not doing that, I don't see how there are any moral issues involved in not having one.

    There's no such thing as a radio licence now, and there hasn't been for over 35 years.
  • All I'm saying is I think there should be more choice. I'll admit there is the odd programme I enjoy watching at somebody elses house, but the majority of what I see on tv and radio doesn't appeal to me. Contributing to pay for the whole lot isnt right.

    I think I am going to see how things develop online, I'd rather pay a small fee or subscription for watching what I do want. Maybe it will end up like sky you pay for a package of channels, or each programme has a certain amount of points which you can buy.
  • Just to get things straight;

    If you're not watching live tv broadcasts then you shouldn't 'morally' be expected to pay for a license, the law is quite clear on this. If, however, you are trying to find a way to watch live tv without a license then it's very much against the mantra of this site and shouldn't be discussed any further.
