From what I recall you have to have a tv licence if the laptop uses mains, but not batteryharveybobbles wrote: »I bought one of these for my Vaio laptop. At the till I got asked for my address for TV licencing purposes. Sure enough a few days later I had a letter asking why I didn't have a TV licence when I had bought TV stuff.
Told 'em it was a pressie!0 -

Incorrect. The law as it stands just now is this:
If you watch or record tv as it's being broadcast, you need a license. Downloading shows from iplayer etc doesn't need a license. Watching a stream of the actual station does, no matter how much of a delay there is.
PC, mobile phone, whatever, if you're watching or recording live TV you need a license.
If you decide that you don't want a license because you're using a pc to view TV, that's your call, but if it's worth watching, it's worth paying for, no?They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -

Not at all. There's no point doing something to save money if its virtually unusable.
Oh, and just a point, clever sod, the amount it'll cost for the OP to go up to the next monthly allowance is most likely MORE than the cost of a TV licence.0 -

well thats a clever idea, but cant the tv detector vans detect any kind of tuner equipment and show exactly where its positioned in the house?

definitely a consideration, but what if limits and speeds are increased and it becomes less of an issue?0 -

There was a report a couple of weeks ago on the bbc news website where they admitted that they now work from a database of premises that 'should be licensed'. There was probably a time when detector vans did exist, but with the advent of 'mobile detectors' (that would be asking the neighbours, and putting their ears to the targets doors\windows and listening or more than likely asking the person who answers the door whilst trying to have a look for a tv - 'have you a license?').
People tend to forget that the 'license man' hasn't any rights of access to your property, he can only get in if you open the door and let him in, thus permit him access. He's not a police officer and if he says 'I can come back with a warrant', tell him 'good, but be quick... 'cos I'm off out in a bit'. He'll likely not get one from the court anyway, they'll expect him to have used his detection equipment not go poking around someones house. He could always lie, but there are more people these days that don't actually have tv's and so he'll be taking a risk if he secures one and then finds no tv in the abode of the person he's targetted, his word will be worth nothing in court from that point on I would imagineIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -

That is true they can't enter your house unless you invite them in, but you can get a criminal record for not having a tv license.0 -
There's never been such a thing as a tv detector van. Pure nonsense propaganda to scare people into buying a license. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0

You say TV is all rubbish so why are you trying to find ways to watch it? If you want to watch TV pay for it. I'm all for saving money but some of the 'ideas' here are out-and-out illegal. If you don't want to pay for the TV license go and join a library and sell your TV. and radio.0

If the OP isn't watching live television, they don't need a licence.
The licence is for watching live television, not for owning a television.0
