Buying a buggy.

jellyhead wrote:i was looking at somebody's buggy today in mothercare but the baby was having a nappy change so i wasn't expected to look at her lol! it was a maclaren techno xt i think but they said they'd had lots of trouble with it and it was poor quality. has anyone else found that to be the case?
Haven't had trouble with the Maclaren but the very expensive Mamas & Papas travel system was utter pants. The buggy started to disintegrate after 18 months and eventually it jammed itself into a semi-collapsed position like a sort of malevolent deck chair. Poor value.
Oh, and the child seat doesn't fit in the back of any car we've tried it in - seat belt webbing is about 2 feet too short - and you can't put it in the front because of the airbag.
We've gone for the Phil & Ted E3 as well.0 -
Ive a mclaren techno, its fab. I had a teutonia y2k to start then moved into the maclaren as my daughter got older and i needed something lighter. (the teutonia was great for a newborn, but god its heavy, and it takes up all my boot space) ive put a buggy board on the maclaren and wish i had bought it earlier. no problems at all !!!!0

I have a phil and teds - it's a good choice for an older child and a newborn, it also has the advantage that you can use it as a single buggy as well, but unfortunately its not cheap. I think the cheapest place you can buy it is kiddicar.com or ebay. It is a good strong durable pram, I have had mine for 3 years (bought for number 1 and number 2 18 months apart) and am still using it for my 3rd child as a single and occasionally a double (number 2 is now 31/2, but gets tired and also sometimes is ill). Another advantage of the pram is that it has a strong second hand price.

:j Hi Gingham,
Am in the club, expecting #2 in April :j :j :j    :j :j
dd is 2 1/2 nearly and walks most places though we take the buggy in case she gets tired & I anticipate that I'll want to tie her down sometimes even at 3 coz I'll want to walk fast. Can't offer much advice I'm afraid as I'm currently tossing around all the options! except that I predict your buggy will get less & less use from ds in the coming months as he wants to walk like a big boy!
Somebody mentioned the seat that went on their mum's silver cross pram - I also remember this and I have a silver cross (£40 2nd hand, best thing we bought - my long baby was in it till about 15 months!) so would love this seat. anyone know where I might find one?

There are nearly always some toddler seats for carriage-built prams on eBay.

When you first see this you think that it is just for one child but it is for two children. It can also fit a baby car seat for your new born. Look really easy to move about and your local baby shop might sell this so you can see what it looks like in real life.“…the ‘insatiability doctrine – we spend money we don’t have, on things we don’t need, to make impressions that don’t last, on people we don’t care about.” Professor Tim Jackson

Hiya,
I also have a Maclaren (Techno) pushchair and will be in a similar situation like you next year. My daughter will be 3 when the new baby is born and I was also thinking of buying a new pushchair as the maclaren one got used a lot, although I really love using it. However, my sister in law recommended that I have the maclaren "reconditioned" by maclaren. I went to Mothercare who gave me 2 quotes: one was about £30 the second was about £45-£50. I chose the second one which meant that anything that could be replaced would be. When the puschair came back it was like brand new. They've changed the breaks, the wheels, the hood and even put a new fabric on the seat as they had some left over in the factory (they don't normally do the seat cover though). The pushchair is now looking brand new and feels it as well!!!It's best to regret things you have done rather than those you have not...0 -
The link below is to baby boom 2000 that sell a really good double buggy that looks & moves like a single buggy. "MUTSY URBAN RIDER WITH SEAT UNIT AND DUO SEAT"
When I 1st saw it I thought it was a single buggy!!!

apparently the mutsy is ridiculously heavy and a brute to steer - looks fab though!
other doubles to look out for are:
phil and teds new side by side - the e3 i think it is
the combi we2 - folds up tiny and light and is very comfy to push and for the children
adventure buggy company (a branch off of phil and teds) pushchairs are great and both the single and doubles take toddler seats, i've got a double with t.s and it has reveloutionised my life, lol!
jane powertwin, looks cool, nice padded seats and is narrow as it is a tandem
marco sky, only a tiny bit bigger than a single umbrella buggy, great for short trips
forgot to mention the buggypod, it's not in the shops just yet but probably will be by the time you have sprog number 2, it's a little seat with wheels that connects to the side of your buggy but folds up when not needed and you can get raincovers for it too so it's a better option than a buggyboard for some circumstances, i.e if your toddler is fairly young and gets tired walking quickly or you like to do long walks / days out, as they can sit and rest or even sleep if they need to whereas a buggy board they can;t really do so.0 -
