Looks like it's for Scottish residents only - shame, I might've gone for it if it included English residents!
  • Very helpful - Halifax seems VERY appealing

I recently applied to my bank (Halifax) to open up a student account. Im in the second year of a 3 year degree.

Anyway I was accepted, but to proceed I have to send in or take in an acceptance letter from Uni.

Thing is that was 18 months ago recieving that letter and I definatly dont have it now. What are my options now?

try going into a branch with your student card and some photo id, or ring halifax and ask what they would need - you should be able to get a letter from student services confirming you are a student that will suffice.

Does anyone know if it's ok to get one of the student accounts now but still be able to change when the new ones come out? Or might this negatively affect my chances of getting the best of the new ones?

You should be able to get a student account now no problems. But don't go for Natwest/RBS at the moment as they will put their rail card on later and will probably say no to you having it if you get an account now. But other than that you should be fine to chop and change to who ever and when ever

I have a bank account with Halifax, currently with an interest free overdraft limit of £500. If I go in an ask them if I can have a larger interest free overdraft, does this require a credit check? Is it recorded on my credit report?

    Thanks

Nat West don't have the Railcard offer on offer right now. I rang them and they said it might be back on again in the Summer but not now, so, BE Aware !!

No way! I'm in the process of applying for an account now.. I only wanted the railcard.. will I not get it? :S If they do end up scrapping the railcard offer, they are going to lose a lot of students!!

Why would they? Noone is going for student accounts yet, they are in the middle of their exams! Railcards are the last things on their mind at the moment.

They only offer the railcard at the beginning of the new year, people haven't finished this year yet.

scrap that application, don't complete it. Reapply when you see the railcard adverts in the branch and online.

  • i am starting university in september and after reading martin's top student accounts, i applied to halifax and after them doing a credit check on me, i was told i didnt have a high enough score, which really annoyed me because i have only ever spent within my own means. i am a 19 yr old who works full-time and have never took out an overdraft/got a credit card/mobile contract, i have only spent what i had.

could anyone give me advice on getting my credit score high before september? would be very thankful as i would like to do for halifax since they give the highest overdraft facility,
