    Hi

Im in my 2nd year at uni, and have had Natwest's student account since i started, as i had one of their accounts before uni it was upgraded to a student one.

I've taken out the overdraft with them (£1400), and have it put in a savings account.

As Halifax offer the biggest overdraft, i wanted to open an account with them so i could put more into my savings. However, when i went to open one with them, the application was rejected due to my credit score.

I've used Experian to check my credit report, and the only negative things i have on there are:

    - my overdraft with Natwest (around £-1200 balance usually), i've never gone over the limit and incurred any charges.
    - a credit card application last month (it got rejected but i dont think they would know that)
    - I also had a few recent identity checks for savings accounts but i dont think these show up either.

The person in the Halifax branch also said my Natwest account would cease to be a student accout if i opened a student account with Halifax, is this true?

They said they would contact me again in 4-6 months to reapply.

Would i need to get my balance with natwest to a positive amount before i apply next time to get accepted? Or remove the overdraft facility if its possible?

Ideally i'd like to keep the natwest account open just for the free railcard, and have my overdraft with Halifax and get my student loan paid into Halifax, as would be necessary.

My daughter, who is in her first year of Uni, has had similar problems. She had a pre-student account with HSBC and when she wanted to upgrade to a student account she was refused. She has since applied to the Halifax for a student account and heard this week that that's been refused to due to poor credit scoring.

She only wants a student account with a small overdraft on it as her first rent cheque bounced 'cos her student loan didn't go in on the day she was told it would- it was a week later and she was charged £25!

She doesn't have any credit cards/loans/hp. Anyone got any advice please?

    TIA
    J

Yes, you will get a student account - it doesn't matter what age you are just that you are a full time student. It's worth getting a student account as you get an interest free overdraft.

Look out for some good offers from banks as you can only get the offers in your first year. (eg RBS £100 cash)

    Hope this helps:D

  • Hi all,

I am going to uni in August hopefully and currently looking into a student account with RBS as I already bank with them and had no probs.
    Question:

Once I have my letter of acceptance to uni should I just go ahead and apply for the a/c or should i wait until 1 month before uni starts?

I will be doing a 1 year full time postgrad course.

I was hoping to open the account for this 1 year course to reap benefits (rail card , interest free o/d etc).
Currently hold a interest paying current a/c with them.Would I need to close it before I could open the student a/c?

p.s I plan to pay in my Student Loan and all my savings up to that date into it. Also I have a very good credit history.

    Thanks in advance:D

  • Nat West don't have the Railcard offer on offer right now. I rang them and they said it might be back on again in the Summer but not now, so, BE Aware !!

Yeah, I was going to ask the same thing!

Would it be ok to get one of the accounts on offer now and then possibly switch later in the summer when the newer ones come out?

I got an unconditional offer so want to move as soon as possible but can't without some more funds!

Does anyone know if it's ok to get one of the student accounts now but still be able to change when the new ones come out? Or might this negatively affect my chances of getting the best of the new ones?
